MCLAREN MP4-12C

Wasn't overly impressed with my first sighting of the car at FOS last weekend.

Watched it up the hill through the straight beyond the Malcolm complex on Friday and it seemed to be porpoising over the bumps a bit too much.

On Saturday, with Lewis driving, it was misfiring badly up to the bridge!

Looked a little better on Sunday - but then I only saw it on the downward run AND I'm certainly not keen on that orange colour scheme! [:(]

Very little noise either - the perennial problem with all turbo engines, of course. []

However, as a guest at McLaren's Technological Centre in Woking yesterday, I am pleased to report the car has fully redeemed itself.

It is a technically brilliant piece of kit. The silver and black version on display was stunning. The factory building in which the prototypes are assembled was spotlessly clean and the small team there were going about their business in unruffled and uncluttered fashion. A new factory for production cars is currently under construction and is scheduled to be finished early next year. All the staff were very enthusiastic and helpful.

The cabin is fantastic - probably the best I have sat in, but gaining access is quite difficult for we, less gymnastic, types and this may rule out the car for several.

Clearly the proof of the pudding is in the driving - so it remains to be seen how well it will perform in the real world, but knowing McLaren a little now, I'm sure it'll be right on the button (!) so to speak. [:D]

AND

The porpoising?- all to do with the first driver's suspension settings.

The misfire? - Lewis wanted all aids switched off so he could do some showboating. The engine was therefore mapped in dyno. mode - but nobody told traction control!

Noise? - an Inconel sports exhaust is now available.

Don't forget this is still work in progress!

Can't wait to drive one. [:)] [:)]

Clive

interesting - i registered my interest for one a long time ago to possibly replace my GT3 RS, the factory invited me to the launch at the MTC but then their newly appointed dealer McLaren London withdrew the invitation saying they cocked up on numbers. not the best of starts frankly, not sure i'm all that keen any more, but i'll let them know this when they come asking for a deposit.

McLaren wrote some while ago to ask if they could send my details to their carefully chosen, but at the time unspecified, dealers and the dealers no doubt less than carefully selected partners. I said no. As a marketing strategy it seemed to lack a certain element of discretion and confidentiality. And everything I hear suggests there is no reason to change my position for the foreseeable future.

Clive, taking the general spectrum of performance cars which segment of that market do you think the car is aimed at?

Nick,

Talking to one of the non-pc technicians (in other words he's at the sharp rather than the promotional end of things) at FOS, he said their main focus at the design stage was 430 Scuderia. Since then Ferrari had moved to another level with 458, now considered to be their main competition.

Speaking to fellow guests, 2 x thirty somethings were definitely going to buy it and had already specced their cars - notwithstanding no price has yet been announced. [8D]

A more mature Japanese gentleman (with 7 Ferraris) was definitely going have one, a very tall mature gentleman with a DB9 was reserving judgment until he had driven one. A very, very mature chap (my age [:(]) with a Lambo, 430, 996 GT2 and 993 TT was definitely going to have one - once he'd off-loaded some of his fleet.

Me? I was impressed with the technology, engineering and commitment but would need to drive one before deciding.

It was a bit of a struggle getting in and out - and I'm not getting any younger! [&:] Judy would definitely have a problem with this, so it would rather negate the fun of having one were she unable to accompany me on 997 trips! []

Then again.........??? [8|] [:D]

Regards,

Clive

Thanks Clive, that is pretty much the impression I had, so I think I'll just sit back and read how others get on with it. I do think it is a big ask to design a car as complex as that from scratch without early versions having a few teething troubles, and then where do you get it serviced when it starts to go wrong...?

Happy to have a ride in yours if you're passing......[;)]

blimey, maybe i'm just not rich enough to keep my name in the top tier of invitees. on that basis they can definately f*** right off.

If anyone gets it right first time, it's likely to be McLaren, I would think. [:)]

Interestingly, all cars are assembled using hand tools - no robots or hydraulics and each piece of the jigsaw is logged so it be traced back to the technician who fitted it. [;)]

By the time cars are sold, prototypes will have completed over 1 million miles in all climates. So the outlook seems pretty good for early owners.

I was originally contacted by Jardine in London, but switched to Rybrook, Birmingham, which is more convenient for me. These are 2 of the 3 appointed UK dealers.

David Tibbetts is Sales Director for McLaren at Rybrook. I can provide contact details if required - seems like a nice boy [8|].

Say, "Clive sent you", 'cos I might get a discount that way! [8D]

Clive

Thanks for the head-up Clive. I agree, if anyone can get it right first time it's these guys. After all, their last effort wasn't too bad [:)]

McLaren F1 wasn't too shabby was it?

They've just turned down 16mil. for this one :-

Word is, it's been promised to Lewis if (when) he wins 3 world championships!

Just hope it's not being designed by the same guys working on the blown diffuser [;)]

Christ alive! For £16 million wouldn't they build a new one for him?

Guess you could say the same about any of the historic machinery making mega-money nowadays - it's a funny old world, is'nt it? [8|]

Somehow I just knew you were going to say that. [:D] On the ball as ever, Nick! [;)]

Mind you, they still managed 2nd. and 4th. with old level kit.......[:)]

and what's the betting it won't be right up there again for Hockenheim. [:D]

Clive
