McPherson Strut mount on S2.

Tipper

New member
Currently looking for an S2 and have found what seems a nice car. The owner has told me that at the last MOTA he received an advisory on one of the front Mcpherson struts. Apparantly it is a tiny bit loose on its mounting. Not enough to fail but this will obviously worsten. So, easy fix (I completely stripped and refurbed my Elise suspension over the winter so not frighened of getting stuck in) or difficult (expensive!). I'm not sure if the top mount is adjustable or not but if it is then could it just be a shot mounting bracket?
Cheers,
Tim.

It could be a worn component but it could also just be normal play in Porsche front struts... I've had a number of advisories over the years even with new struts, get it checked of course but I suspect it's from an MOT station who knowns nothing about 944's.
If you do decide to change them and considering you want a car for using on the track them Koni adjustables are nice. If the S2 struts are the same as the 220 turbo which I believe they are then koni do a new insert that requires a bit of work but saves you money from having to buy complete new struts. The instructions for this kit are very clear and it's an easy thing to accomplish and makes a hell of a difference to the handling of the car.

Thanks Pete, sounds good.
Thoughts of tracking the car are rapidly dissappearing as the real reason for selling the Elise (probable lack of time and certain lack of funds for the next couple of years) hits home.
I'll probably just enjoy the 944 for what it is.

Well I still have my struts left over after the KW installation with good mounts and shockers that never had any bother with MOT's (though do need refreshing). So if you decide it is the top mount you could have my struts off me at a good price and mod them yourself to prevent any off the road time with your 944 if you do the Koni insert mod, or just take the mounts off and junk the remainder of the strut. I'll only price the struts for the top mounts as they are very very expensive new as the rest of the strut is pretty worthless. PM me if you're interested.

If its the top mount, then its likely to be the top bearing thats failed. They sometimes do...
Porsche new ones are ££££££££££££ BUT used ones are usually ok.. Just check the bearings first...

I still have my old top mounts from my Turbo, from when i fitted the Racers Edge ones.

You can have them for a reasonable fee![;)]

Thanks all.
I've agreed to buy another car now (subject to the usual). I hope to have it next week and I'll post some piccies etc.
