Mechanic - Cambridge

Hi guys

I am new to Porsche ownership, i am now the proud owner of a 944 S2.

Couple of problems though:-

1. The gear stick is very slack, lots of play, in neutral (or indeed any other gear) there is at least 3" play either side. I was advised that both sets of gear box bushes need replacing. After inspection (local mechanic) these are ok. Is this a common problem?

2. There is a noise - sounds like the rear near side wheel bearing but these were both replaced only 5000 miles ago!? Same mechanic advises that there is nothing wrong with the bearing, but potentially could be a problem with the gear box (both problems could be linked).........GULP!

Anyone have any advise / experience of a similar problem? Or does anyone have any idea where i could get a second opinion (local to Cambridge)?

Thanks

Dan (desparate)

There is a dealership in Cambridge, which probably isn't much help as the'd charge an arm and a leg. If all else fails you could always get a quote. There is also a place in Colchester - see my simular question (mechanic needed East Anglia)

Thanks

Would appreciate the Cambridge address, i can drop it off and walk home then....booo hissss!

I have read elsewhere on the forum something about gear box oil, needing to be regularly changed. Last time this was done, according to my records, was about 5000 miles ago, but they may not have used the right oil? Anyone else heard of this problem before?

Dan.

Hello mate, I use a company in Cambridge called Barr-Tech (they specialize in Porsche and Ferrari) The work they have done for me has seemed OK (nothing they've touched has fallen off or stopped working - So far - lol). They helped me sort out what appears to be a standard relay problem by lending me some parts untill the right bit part fixed the problem and just charged me for that which I thought was good of them. The only problem I had with them was that they didnt have four wheel alignment - so I had to go to Autostrasse near braintree (who also seemed very helpfull).

Their number is 01223 425 300

And the guys you want are called Tino and NIno (brothers) one does the mechanical side and the other body-work but I can never remember which one is which.

Hope that helps any questions just ask

Barr-tech have a website. I heard from someone who works next door to it that the labour rate is something like £40/hour, but my memory may be faulty, and that was about a year ago.
