Mechanical failure of roof!

Hi,

Over the last couple of weeks I noticed that the roof on my MY05 'S' appeared a little tight in its final stages of closing and, about 5 seconds after it was closed, it would click loudly. I should add that I've only had the car 6 months so cannot vouch for its treatment in the preceding 2 years.

I should have taken heed and done something about it ...

Yesterday one of the connections for the rods (a plastic connection) sheared and the roof no longer works. The motor's fine (it operates the metal bodywork normally) and I've been able to close the roof manually. Before I make the call to the OPC I was wondering whether anybody else has had this problem? I'm less than impressed and want Porsche to contribute to the repair cost.

Thanks,
Froddy []

The roof isn't even covered by the extended warranty i don't think, so don't hold your breath about Porsche contributing.

The ball sockets do wear and can become detached, but this is more common on older 986 series cars. I guess the parts are very similar on the 987. It may be the hood has been over tensioned at some point in the past, but very hard to prove. Maybe the OPC could give you a print out of previous visits or repair work prior to your ownership ?

unfortunatly a number of 987 do suffer fromthe same problem as 986 did you will probably need a couple of new link rods and setting up and should be ok

I had this happen on my 3rd Boxster. Turned out to be down to a previous fault (relay) where the roof motor used to run on after closing the clam on the way down and had worn down the teeth on the gearboxes... Careful observation showed the clicking noise was the tensioning rams on the shell chattering as the tension came on and off as the gears passed onto these last teeth. Used to be a real Clack-Clack once the clam closed.
