Membership Privacy?

It started on Aug 7th with an email telling me: "Your motor insurance policy is coming up for renewal." continuing with: "Whether you're still driving your Porsche Boxster or you have a new car etc etc".
Then a letter dated Aug 5th: "It's almost time to renew your annual Porsche Boxster insurance policy."
Then a text this morning: "Call ****** **** today etc etc and save on your insurance renewal..."

I insure with another company, so where is my personal data coming from?

This is a situation surrounding many aspects of our lives.
We had this approach over a few years, but have no idea how the contact details are found or bought, the latter I think.
Sign of the times.

I've never used one for exactly that reason. I did wonder if the source was nearer "carefully selected" supporters due to the level of information likely to be found on my membership.........

Certainly in my case club and forum have no information regarding insurance, and I have never seen any evidence of club specific info being used outside the club.

I know from my local regional organisers that the club is (perhaps over) zealous in its approach to data sharing.

Hi Bill, if you want it eradicated for the future, email or call their data protection officer asking for a subject access request, whereby they legally have to tell you what data they hold on you/your car and where they got it from. Then ask in writing for a right to erasure request to be actioned which does what it says on the tin. Good luck!

Details are readily available from MID, the Motor Insurers Database.

I very much doubt the club shares membership data - I'd like to see some evidence from your RO to support their statement

This is what is available on askmid when I put my registration in:

This vehicle is showing as INSURED on the Motor Insurance Policy Database today.​

I've deleted my reg number for this post​

The make and model details on the database are:​

PORSCHE Boxster 718 Spyder

It still begs the question as to where the "insurer" got my mobile phone number, my address and my email from? Yet alone my registration number from...... I'm fairly sure my current insurers wouldn't want to release my details to any competitors!

As to action, somewhat ironically, there is the statement: "we respect your privacy."

This is from the insurer's application:
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to access or obtain copies of the personal information held about you by us.
A response to your request will be provided to you within one month of us receiving a valid request. If you wish to exercise this right against our partners you will need to write to them directly. In accordance with the GDPR, we will not charge for this information in most cases. To submit your request please email dpo@xxxxxxxxxx alternatively you can write to the Data Protection Officer, xxxxxx xxxx Insurance, xxxxxxxxxx
For security reasons, you must include your full name, address and date of birth when writing to us.

Again ironically, I have to provide my date of birth to enable the request to proceed...........

I have this evening submitted the request. I'll let you know their response within a month.

My son is the GDPR and Data Security Manager for a company that is an MOD Contractor.
He told me that in today]s world I should assume that any data I've ever put into a computer or tablet or mobile phone has been harvested and sold, to multiple entities.
BTW, Data on you held by any Government Security organisation is not necessarily subject to GDPR.

I am indeed in the 21st century and very much aware of the "kick backs" that can be obtained from this level of information.
I'm not shouting about it, I would like to know its source.

It will be revealed this week if the one month answer timescale answer is to be believed...........

What makes you think the data is from the club?

Could be from your current insurer.

It seems as though you’ve contacted the organisation who has sent you the email, letter and text message, so legally they are required to tell you from where they obtained your details.
