Mice damage to wiring loom

John H

New member
A friend of mine (not a PCGB member) has had mice damage his wiring loom in the engine bay, causing all sorts of warning lights to come on. Garage (not OPC) is initially saying that a new loom is needed. The car is a 987 Boxster 2.7

My question ... is the wiring loom in sections? or does replacement mean replacing the whole thing from front to back?

Any other advice welcome.

Thanks

The engine loom is available separately. About £930 inc Vat. It is model-specific, so you need to take care when ordering.

It maybe possible to repair the loom however that would depend on the damage.

An OPC maybe better placed to do the repair as they will have access to the cars wiring diagrams.

It is a very common problem was Boxster and indeed Caymans, those critters love the dark and warm and Porsche use a cellulose coating on the wires, they go crazy for that!!!

I have also known owners (mainly USA) who store there cars through the winter to use moth balls in the engine bay to discourage the mice.

Best way to discourage them is to regularly drive the car, they don't like the noise or the extreme heat.

Thanks for the swift reply. Good news that it is sectional, bad news about the price! []
I'll pass on the info.

I wanted to retro fit climate control but was told each loom is specially made and that this wasn't possible, now the climate control is probably in the main loom so understandable to not be practical, most engine bays have their own loom but whether this applies with Porsche I wouldn't be too sure. Just seen another reply that the bay loom is available, fingers crossed for you.

I did hear of a new Carrera having mouse damage to the engine bay loom and became an insurance write it off. This was only a couple of years ago.[&o] Hopefully your damage is not too extensive and is in a repairable/replaceable section.

Well the good news is that the damage was not overly extensive, and the garage (a well respected Porsche indy) was able to repair it, so no new loom needed.

However, when they got down to checking the engine bay, they found a horde of nuts! [:-]

Make sure your garages are squirrel proof this winter! []
