Michelin or Pirelli, Pirelli or Michelin....

I've run Continental and Michelin on my 996 and preferred the Michelins. I chose the Michelins over the Pirellis at the time.

Decision time again but this time on a 997 Carrera 2 S. So who is running what tyre and for what reasons did you make the choice?

Comments and advice welcome [:)]

C2S = Michelins every time

Other models more variable - Turbo's a lot of the guys like Bridgestones and to be fair I have them on mine and seem fine.

Always been happy with Michelins, however not got anything to compare as I've never used anything else.

I was thinking of fitting winter tyres this year as last year was a nightmare. I've seen a set of N Rated Nokians WRs with a set of alloys for quite a reasonable price. Are these any good.

My C2S is my daily driver and I won't be looking to do any really serious driving over the winter.

Just want to make sure that the Nokians do the job and won't jeopardise my warranty.

You can search this website for some good comparisons

Bridgestone every time for me, C2S as well as Turbo. Having tried the Michelin I feel the Bridgestone gives a better all round performance. Better rim protection too (not that it did me any good recently..[:(]) However, the Michelin Super Sport, which isn't (yet) N rated may change all that from what I've read!

I am itching to get a set of these, N rated or not. However they are meant to be almost impossible to get hold of anywhere across Europe.

Have Michelin Pilot Super Sports fitted on our RS for a few months now. They seem great road tyres, they coped well in a sudden heavy downpour, and they give a slightly softer ride than the Cups they replaced.

Interestingly, even though the Cups that came off and the Super Sports that replaced them were the same sizes the Super Sports seemed to be noticeably wider, especially on the rears.

I know the Super Sports are not N rated at present, but I am told the cars at the Porsche Experience use these tyres, so can't be that bad!

Cannot comment on limits of grip or track use as our RS is now strictly a road car.

Etyres

are showing them in stock Alex. Of course whether they really have them or not is another matter!
Also these

I have bought from them before and seem to be good supplier

I found this link really helpful, posted in response to a question I had around tyres: -

For Winter tyres approved tyres seem to be limited to Nokian and Pirelli. Can't comment on which are best, I'm awaiting delivery of the Pirellis. At the time of ordering I think these looked slightly cheaper than the Nokians, but the decision was more around what was the most likely to be available, the phrase ""¦ hen's teeth" comes to mind.

I'm new to the 911, for summer tyres I've a set of Michelins and a set of Bridgestones. Happy with both, so far they have more grip than I have bravery (which I'm hoping continues).

I've used Pirellis and Michelins on my Boxster S the Michelins being by far the better of the two the Pirellis being useless in snow, I've also had Continentals, Michelins and currently Bridgestones on the Cayman S all seemed good at the time but the Michelins lasted much better then the Conti's, the Bridgestones compare well for driving and wear against the Michelins and are much cheaper.

All have been used all year round as I have no specific winter tyres. I won't have Pirellis again.

my contis lasted 8-9k on the cayman s michelin pilot sports were still going strong after 18k miles .just put pirelli sotto zeros(to guarentee we dont get any snow!)and they seem fine in the good weather[:D] will wait and see if we get anything to test them this year!!

Does anyone have an update on the homologation of the Pilot Super Sports, please? Just swapped back onto my summer tyres and there isn't a huge amount left on my current Bridgestone's (about 3mm rear, a bit more at the front). Am hoping to get some PSS when Costco have their next deal. I have emailed Michelin but haven't had a response yet.

+1 for Bridgestones. Much smoother and quieter ride than the Pirellis. Really recommend them.

As of 18th October 2011 from Michelin: :We are currently in the process of working with Porsche on the approval of these sizes."

Just replaced my Pirelli P-Zeros with Michelin Sports (not Super) ........ Had to buy a set Turbo Alloys to get them though...[:D] ....[8D] !!! ...... Much smoother ride than the Pirelli's and much quieter. .....They've taken a while to settle down, didn't really feel confident too with them to start with. But I think that's normal with new rubber..... cheers, Mike

Always had Michelins however went with Pirelli last time.....simply because couldn't get the Michelins !

My only observation is that the Pirellis don't seem to be wearing as well. Other than that, they seem fine.

Cheers,

Have Mich PSS fitted on my car from Mich PS, noticeably around fast bends doesn't seem to roll on the tyre wall as much. Much more grip in the dry and not much more in terms of cost per set (approx £100 more)
