Michelin or Pirelli?

Hi Folks
Boots need changing in the not too distant future, so have been to local tyre specialist for quotes.
Quite pleased with OE Michelin Sport Pilots, and have been quoted for fitment & balancing and with nitrogen fill (not too bothered about that as I don't track the car) is £1020 for 4 tyres.
The fitter also quoted £850 for Pirellis (also N1 rated) which is a decent saving, but I have no experience of the Pirellis.
So, question is, which ones do I plump for?
Anyone have any feedback on the Pirellis on handling/wet weather and noise or are they just as good?
Any advice greatly received![8|]

I know its not quite what you are asking but a few years ago I was at a "Boxster Experience" at Knockill circuit where we were let loose for an hour or so on the track on a number of cars The one thing which sticks in my mind was that one of the car was so bad relative to the others at first corner I thought it had a puncture Turned out that the car in question was on different tyres from others hence different handling Anyway unless you can drive a car on the other tyres for comparison I tend to stick with what is on car if that is what you are used too and happy with - though in your case it is a fairly decent saving!

Rob, I recently had to renew all four, and I had inherited Conti's (crap in the wet & cold) soI moved to Bridgestones. These have been really good, good grip in the wet, dry and cool conditions. Below is a paste from a post I made a while back.

For your info, and for those of you getting twitchy [:eek:], I have just had Micheldever Tyres (Hampshire just outside Winchester 01962 774437) quote for a full set for my C2 (235/35 ZR19 & 295/30 ZR19), fully fitted, balanced & valves, the quotes are as follows;

Michelins at £1041 (only one front and two rears available but can get more fronts in a couple of days), Bridgestones at £787.29 (all available)
Pirelli at £838.31 (one rear and one front available, but again can get the required in a couple of days).

So if you are desperately seeking tyres then Micheldever has access to some.

Just thought I'd add to the confusion [:D]

Be wary of threads on Rennteam - a lot of posters are US based and a good proportion in sunny states too, where ambient temperatures can be different to the UK.

Michelin should give you greater life, Pirellis may have a higher grip limit in wet curves.

If you are or know a COSTCO memeber get a quote from them for the Michelins. Sometimes in September they do a cut price deal. Year before last I got 4 tyres for £550. Lat year the deal was not so good but was about the same as three tyres cost for the four.

Thanks for the advice chaps
As I live on Guernsey there isn't a Costco or other viable alternative to the Tyre fitter I'm looking at (they're a decent bunch), so it is down to Michelin or Pirelli.
Valid point about sticking with the Michelins if I'm happy with the way they perform etc.
I'll probably plump for the Michelins then (I seem to remember they have a better 'shoulder' than other tyres as they offer better protection from 'kerbing' which is a daily hazard here on the Island with our narrow roads) as they are good in all weather and have predictable and stable handling.
Better the Devil you know et al..![:D]

Are people mixing up Boxster tyres with 997 here???? £550 for 4 Michelins for a 997 seems unbelievable to me!

My OPC quoted £450 for one rear last week when I had a puncture. Whilst I accept they charge way way over the odds I was expecting a full set for a 997 to be at least £1000 even at a discount tyre outlet. I obviously told the OPC to keep his tyre and in fact went down the road and got it repaired as the puncture was dead centre in the tread and it still had about 6mm left.

Yes, I would be amazed if you could get a SET of Michelins for under £1000.
