Michlen Pilot sport PS2 V PS3

Tried taking the car out only to discover a flat tyre. It doesn't look like a puncture repair is suitable so I'm looking for a new tyre. I would normally change both sides at the same time but these tyres have done barely 2k miles since I bought them so am considering changing just one.

I'm lazy so prefer mobile tyre fitting solutions. The cheapest I've found so far is circa £140. (Ouch!)

The cuurent tyres are PS2 (N3). Yes I realise I don't need N rated tyres but that's a separate discussion.

PS3's are more commonly available now. I'm guessing the main difference will be tread pattern? Not sure if the tyre compound will have changed much?

The question is if it is ok to have 3 corners with PS2 and one with PS3? Naturally when changing the tyres next, they would be changed at the same time so would be identical.

The car is used on weekends and (hopefully) the occasional track day later in the year.

I wouldn't mix PS2 & PS3 if you can help it - which you can in this case.

I have PS3s on the front of my car and they're holding up very well to road use, 2 trackdays and a trip around the ring. They give plenty of confidence in the wet too and I'll be changing the toyos on the rear for PS3s too when the time comes.
 
Spending proper money on tires, then miss macth an axle is pointless.

Sell both on and get two new ones. Or keep looking there must be one tire some where.
 
Porsche recommends against fitting different tires on the same axle (and in fact, fitting different different brand/model, etc on different axles). The reasons being differences in grip, sidewall behavior, etc can upset the handling/braking balance. I would look for a new PS3 N spec if I were you - particularly as there are differences in tread compound and possibly tread pattern between N spec and non-N spec versions of the same manufacturers tires.

Really?

The other 3 corners have PS2 N3 which is why I suggested that's what I'll buy. (No point me changing all 4 corners as they have done barely 2k miles since being fitted.)

Or am I missing something?
 
This depends.

Many people believe that Porsche use the N ratings on the 911s only these days making those ratings somewhat irrelevant to a 944. Saying that, my car is on N rated Michelins.

Seeing as the success I had have with Michelins on previous and current cars despite thair cost (On one car the Kumhos did not last half as long but they were not half as cheap either... (11k vs 23k on the front of a Mondeo V6)) I shall be keeping a careful eye on this thread ;). I am thinking of the PS3s for now.
 
I would fit ps2 for now even if it was only part worn or just change both, you won't push the car to a limit where having all 4 tires the same would have saved you. It's a road car, so more likely poor judgement or other driving error will be at blame b4 the tire macth.

For me 944T used 6 tires. 2 sets on the rear to one set on the front. Rear set will see about 10k so a part worn on the front with 4mm will see out the last off your rears. Even if you fit 2 off simmler tread depth.

I would macth the load limit and speed rating.

Germany feel much differnt about this,

Just Get some miles on it
 
Personally I'd stick with the PS2's. I tried both on my 156GTA, and the difference in grip and traction was very noticeable. The PS3 seemed to be a far less performance orientated tyre.
 
I was going to open up another thread but it seemed better to continue this thread since the title covers my question fairly well.

ATM my fronts have come up for being replaced. My tyre fitter was edging me towards Michelin SuperSports until like Eldavo, he found that they were not available in my size. He did suggest Goodyear EfficientGrips with the other choices being offered in my size being Michelin Pilot Sport 2s (N rated) and the Pilot Sport 3s. And we all thought choice was great

I was tempted by the PS2s although having a newer model out also changes that (the PS3) in addition to the newer tyre being cheaper. I have heard that the old PS2s were the precursor for the PSS and that the PS3s are more of an all rounder tyre.

I guess my question to you chaps is which would you go with on the front?

I shall not lie, your reply was also edging me towards the PS3s! I was quietly hoping you had tried both! But that comment has almost sold the PS3s to me.
