Mike's '89 944 Turbo

My Dad has owned an '89 944 Turbo for a few years now (formerly a PCGB member's car judging by the sticker in the windscreen). It came with 18" Sport Design wheels and he drove it about on and off over the years, fixing stuff as it broke and changing oil etc.

Last year the car had been sitting for a while and a few jobs had been piling up so I started helping out with it to get it back to how it should be - the paint was looking tired, numerous interior parts had broken, it needed a belts service and the ride quality was appalling on the 18" wheels.

We started by putting it through an MOT (passed no advisories) and the underside is solid so we set about replacing/repairing:

Broken centre console lid
Broken visor clips
Sagging headlining near boot
Damn good interior clean

Then put it in to JMG for belts change, gave it a full fluids/plug change and got a new exhaust tip attached as the old one rusted off. Finally binned the old 18" wheels and got a set of D90s in lovely condition from a member on here, got the wheel alignment done so the wheels point in the same direction, then clay/machine polish/wax and here is the result:

It has a few jobs outstanding (as always) but we are getting there I think. It drives brilliantly after the service/wheel work.

Shopping list:

Cassette box hinge - OPC
Visor clips - OPC
Headlining - Southbound Trimmers

None are expensive: even the headlining replacement kit from ST is under ÂŁ50.

Those bits are all done (I think I got them from Frazerpart and just re-glued the headlining). Next up are new diverter valve as ours is broken, fixing the door check strap while hoping the nuts on the wing remain captive, and tightening the boot seal to stop the lovely fumes coming in when the windows are open.

I am amazed at how well the paint came up considering its age, and how well it drives considering its age and mileage (164k).

Great work!

I down-sized from 17" Cups 1's to D90s and it definitely improves the ride a lot; you'd almost wonder if to was designed that way :)

Great-looking car.

That is one lovely looking Turbo!!

I am also planning to downsize from my current 17's to some 16's - I must be getting old!!

16s are cool again!Nice ride, more squirmy and involving, and the rubber is cheaper!

Indeed. Although you'll never convince some people that ride and handling is better than looking bling in the local Tesco car park late on a Sunday night. Innit...[&o]

Hi gang I've an 86 Turbo with Tele Dials.. what the views on D90s over those? Im guessing these weren't an option back in 86?

No, as the offset is wrong for '86 cars. Teledials are perfect anyway, or the Fuchs if you can find them.

The early offset 17" cup wheels used to be a lot cheaper than the later offset. Probably the best compromise for looks, performance and tyre choice. If I had an 86 turbo I'd fit those.

After getting all the above bits done and enjoying a bit of the spring, Dad has decided that getting in and out of the sports seats is becoming a bit of a chore so it is being sold. It's surprising how a few simple changes (notably all in the direction of how it came from the factory) can alter the enjoyment factor of a car for the better, I hated driving the car at the start and love it now.
