Mileage Sanity Check - Prospective 997 purchase

Hi all

I've had a pre purchase inspection done on a 2009 997 and the engine running hours are 2000 against a mileage of 30,000. An average speed of 15mph sounds low to me. My daily car has averaged 23mph in a mix of urban and country. The MOT history shows a steady progression of mileage across 5 owners so no immediate red flags. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

The mileage is very low for the miles.

Where was it based, was it mainly city, the service history and invoices should tell. Does the mot history fit in with the service history If its yes then that may help to explain, but it means a lot of low mileage city journeys.

The other one i come across is first owner putting on the miles prior to first service stamp and b4 mots and basically having the car clocked.

I do lots of checks and I use an average of 30mph as the benchmark. I expect normal deviation of +/- 5mph but nothing like that what you have seen.
But ask questions. The funniest example was a low mileage car with huge hours. It transpired the previous keeper was a golf professional and in colder months he would routinely leave the car running whilst he did a lesson so he could get back into a warm car! There could be a plausible answer!

Anthony,

Have you verified the MOT history online? I don’t know how easy it is to clock a Porsche, but with PIWIS I would have thought that there would be a record remaining. I assume that nothing untoward was flagged-up by the PPI?

Although possible, with five previous owners in the last 12-years it will be a challenge to contact them all for mileage verification.

I've had the Porsche specialist that did the inspection cross reference some of the other data from the DME and as far as they are concerned everything looks in order and correlates. I was dubious, but they were unconcerned. MOT's stack up for mileage so it looks like I've got some winter golf professionals as previous owners. My daughter lives in a city and her average is 18mph over the last year in her car so it looks like it can vary hugely. I'm sure I'll be able to creep that average mileage calculation up in due course!
