millbrook brakes

had a great day out yesterday at millbrook, great on the banked bowl-100mph no hands[:(] mile staight great,instructor excellent,drove dark green manual 997tt.

my car at opc squeaky brakes anyone else had this problem

Millbrook sure is fun, it really is strange doing 100mph and not holding the wheel! Did your instructor get you to do an emergency stop and take your hands off the wheel whilst you were slowing through 80? Mine did! A MOST impressive display of Porsche braking stability.

As for squeaky brakes, my 997tt has those, particularly when reversing, but also at town speeds when going the "right" way. I am due a visit to Sutton Coldfield OPC to get some rattles and squeaks fixed (front suspension creakes like mad in the wet) so maybe they can oil the brakes at the same time?

The Cermaic brakes on the olive green Turbo did squeel a bit when light braking. This I was told was because the brakes needed a power-jetting clean to get rid of debrit inside them. Not sure I believed that though. After some heavy braking on the track though the squeels soon went away.

I know Porsche had a recall for early PCCBs as many did squeel but I thought new models had this resolved now. Perhaps not.
 
I tried a tiptronic (as I had ordered one) and managed 165 on the straight - and still slowed down for the bend. The brakes on my car are steel not PCCB.
 
I Have the PCCB on mine and they do squeal at low speeds, originally when in traffic I found myself looking around at other cars to see who was making the noise, now I've pulled the plug on my PSE and the permanent growl covers up the brake squeal and the rear quarter rattles (in fact for all the "made in germany" hype the 997 build quality can be a bit doggish).
Still wouldn't change it for much else as have gone the audi "rubber brake" route and the "what electrics will work today lottery" italian offering.

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Took our own white GT3 with instuctor to Millbrook yesterday. Definitely saw 162, poss 166 on the mile straight. Doesn't feel like a mile at those speeds! Speed bowl surreal; accelerating from 75 to 100 hands-free. (Good time to make that phone call!)Got up to 150 there.
Did alpine routes and outer handling circuit too. Felt I was going quite quick until instructor showed how it can be done. Will just have to keep going back to practice. Wife there too, apparently our instructor ( a Porsche instructor ) had car airborne on alpine route with her!

Our steel brakes squeal sometimes, particularly in slow traffic. Instructor says some cars always seem to , others never do. Same with ceramics apparently.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your day there John, I made a little airtime on my visit, but be warned anyone in a Cabriolet.. it sets off the roll over protection [;)]

1)Find 1 x technician
2)Said technician drives car like he stole it..
3)Use brakes excessive
4)Return to dealership
5)check if chargeable
5a) Charge 1 hour excessive time
5b) Return to owner under warranty

Wise words!!!

Going back to Millbrook, on my GT3 day we got 160-170mph on the mile straight & 180 mph on the bowl, with the steel barriers flashing past at that speed it concentrates the mind!

Must confess the Alpine circuit was a complete blur just couldn't get the bends set in my brain, every circuit fast, but a new experience, the instructor was awesome on the twisty stuff!
 
I only hope that the Siverstone setup will be as good as Millbrook, the Alpine circuit and Bowl do leave some wonderful memories implanted on ones brain... [:D]

I've done the Millbrook day in several cars, most recently in a GT3. First time I went there was in a Boxster S and we did a 0>130>0 run on the 1 mile straight. But the GT3 was amazing. It could do it twice withinin the same distance - ie 0>130>0>130>0.

On the high speed bowl my instructor said that the key factor for stability was the aerodynamics. He said the C2/C4/C4Ss move about quite a bit at 140 (the max they are supposed to do under instruction), the TT was much more stable, the GT3 even better, and the GT3RS the best of all. We took the GT3 up to a significant speed, in the rain, and it felt superbly secure.

The hands off trick at 100mph is fun. I put the cruise on and folded my arms. Didn't Tiff Needell do this on one of the TV progs, and actually get in the back of the car and read a newspaper whilst the car was lapping at 100mph with no driver?

I hope to be hearing and possibly spotting some nice machinery.
