Milometer

The entire instrument is driven by an electrical pulse that I was told comes from the gearbox but I suspect actually comes from the ECU or the ABS system. So if the entire instrument has stopped (you can't see what speed you are going[8D]) then it is likely to be a break in that cable (mine was once broken by a guy fitting a new radio/phone/satnav system).
If problem is just the odometer (mileage travelled) then normal reason is the plastic cogs are damaged. I seem to remember an article in Porsche Post on how to refurbish these, it was a year or 2 back.

If it's just the odometer then as Mark says it's probably the usual cog disintegration problem. See this thread: Odometer problem
I used Reap to do mine, after toying with the idea of trying myself. I had a minor issue, though - the unit came back, worked for about 1.5 miles then failed again. Reap were happy to have it back to sort out (although expected me to pay carriage), but before I had the chance to remove it the odometer started working again. I'd done about 80 miles by that point, no idea why it suddenly started working. Anyway, Reap said if it failed again they'd be happy to have it back to fix under the same terms. Still going at the moment (about 750 miles later).
