Mind the GAP

Are there any views out there about Gap insurance. The OPC scheme I think is quite costly and on the internet I can get 3 years cover of £20,000 for £279. ??

I have tended to avoid Gap for my last few purchases.

The GAP insurance offered by my OPC was about three times what I could get it for on the Internet. There aren't a huge number of companies that offer it. For a car with a lot of options, I think its a good idea. But you can also get "agreed value" insurance with some normal insurance policies.

I picked my new C4S last week and OPC quoted £685 for GAP. I have taken a comprehensive policy out with a 3rd party which is based on replacing the car like for like for 3 years with a maximum pay out of up to £25k for £335 so a big saving.

Two internet Gap companies were recommended in the Sunday Times. www.click4gap.com underwritten by 'Red Sands' based in Gibraltar www.surfandprotect.com underwritten by AXA based in UK I buy Gap insurance from surfandprotect as it is underwritten by a recognised and established UK company (gives me more confidence they'll pay up if I claim). For the best price I usually get an online quote from click4gap. Then visit surfandprotect and get an online quote (which will cost more than click4gap). Surfandprotect have a price match policy and will discount any like-for-like quote by £5. So you can get AXA cover for £5 less than click4gaps competitive internet price. I have never had to claim so I can't vouch for either companies after-sales service.
