Minor electrical problems

I have a 1987 944 which has a few minor electrical gremlins. The clock, cigarette lighter and ashtray light do not work. I have the Haynes manual but I have to confess that I do find it difficult to follow. I have checked all the fuses and they are all OK but I believe that someone has done some underdash modifications because there is a cut red wire under the dash to the right of the steering column.

Does anyone have any guidance they can offer and is it possible to get an easier to understand wiring diagram from anywhere?
Many thanks
Clive C

Clive,

You could try downloading the factory manuals from Rick Cannell's site (www.cannell.co.uk), but the diagrams on there may not be any easier. Having said that, the wiring diagrams in all the Haynes manuals I have ever used have been awful, so the ones in the factory manuals are likely to be much better.

Sorry to say, I suspect you are down to chasing the wires by hand. Using a multimeter. Tedious, but satisfying when done. Some ham-fisted twit has probably severed one wire somewhere which has knocked out all three lights. Worth checking earths - if they share an earth then it could well be that.

P.S. You list your car as an '87 S2. I thought they only started making them in '89?

They did. If it's an '87 then it's not an S2. Re. the diagrams, the factory ones are easy to read if you're used to schematics; Haynes ones may as well have been compiled by my cross-eyed cat.

Crumbs - your cat is up to compiling wiring diagrams? Despite being cross-eyed?

I'm impressed. Can I send my cat along for some lessons please? I'm slightly fed up of her sitting around all day, eating far too much, doing nothing to justify her existence and shedding fluff everywhere. [:)]

Well that's what mine does all day too if I'm totally honest...[]

Sorry, BTT > the diagrams Oli suggested (the proper Porsche ones) will see you right.
