Minor niggles

Sometimes when I put the handbrake on the big exclamation mark light doesn' t come on. The handbrake always works, it' s just the light. Any ideas? I would guess that there' s a loose connection somewhere but I have no idea of the workings.

Also, the inner switch for opening the boot doesn' t always work either. It feels a bit loose but I don' t know the workings of that one either!

Bit helpless really

The handbrake switch is under the handbrake itself and they sometimes work loose or gets full of dirt, so that would be a good place to start - It' s not easy to get at so it may be easier to remove the seat - (six bolts 2 at the front, 4 at the back).

The boot release - is the motor running when you press the switch (behind the carpet in the boot ) if so it is probably the catches that need cleaning and adjusting - they sometimes stick. if not then the switch - might be worth getting a replacement from one of the breakers - Porschapart or similar. I am not sure how the switch comes out but the carpet can be worked out over it and IIRC is held on with velcro in that area.

Below a recent Post from titanic /944

Clean off all visible corrosion and old grease from pins and catches by scraping/wire brushing/abrasive polishing; lubricate with light machine oil, removing surplus with cloth (a squirt with WD40 prior to oiling helps take the oil into all the nooks and crannies, thereby whetting internal surfaces); check that the 2 semi-circular catches in each assembly (i.e. the ones that close behind the heads of the pins) are returning freely by pressing sideways with screwdriver against return spring and releasing; if not satisfactory, slightly loosen one of the catch-retaining nuts on the offending catch(es) - overtightening can distort the casing so that it impedes the catches; if still not satisfactory, remove catch assembly(-ies) and clean by soaking in petrol or similar and re-fit. These are re-aligned relative to the pins by leaving the catch-retaining nuts loose-ish so that closing the hatch allows the conical pins to centre the catches; then open the hatch and fully secure the nuts, taking care not to over-tighten as above.

Hello Helen and welcome to the forum.

It' s great to have a technical problem to consider so here I go:-

Handbrake warning light.
I' m on my second 944 and neither of them had/have working handbrake warning lights.
As Paull noted, there is a switch (the same as the door courtesy light switch) mounted under the handbrake wich is opened by the handbrake presseing down onto it. On my Lux, this switch was mounted on a particularly nasty pressed metal braket which bent. As a result the switch wouldn' t press on the underside of the handbrake lever, as it should, and the light stayed on constantly. To remedy this, the previous owner disconnected one of the wires from the switch.
I don' t know why it doesn' t work on my current 944, I haven' t realy looked.
In summary, the operation is fairly simple so try the following tests:-
a) Is there power getting to the switch?
b) Does the switch work properly if you fiddle with it?
c) Is the switch being depressed by the handbreak lever?

Self Raising Tailgate
There is significant debate as to wether the tailgate raises when you press the button or not. Some say it does, some say it does but only when you shut the door, some say it doesn' t.
First test - as Paul noted - do you hear a wirring sound from the motor in the boot?
No wirring, motor not working so you have an electrical fault.
Second test - If you unlock the boot with the key, does the tailgate rise by it' s self. If the tailgate is slow or doesn' t rise then the first port of call is new tailgate struts. These aren' t that expensive (in Porsche terms at least).
You indicate that sometimes your tailgate works. This could be that the struts are tired and could do with replacing. As they are presurised gas they work better when they are hot. Does the tailgate work better in hot weather?

Perhaps more quetsions than answers, but something to be going on with.
