mirror removal

Just back from the Sussex Summer event, excellent weather and a great turnout (except 924's, only 3 of us that I could find - one of each, a Turbo, a 2.0 and my 'S'.)

So, having seen all those immaculate cars in the concours I thought I'd pull the door mirrors apart to prepare them for a much-needed re-paint. The manual makes it sound so easy.....

Now, I'm fiddling about in the hole in the base for what seems like eternity and nothing is coming apart. So I take off the mirror to have a look up inside the hole but still can't see this locking ring thingy. What am I looking for exactly?

For a start there is a hole in the metal mirror housing and a hole in the plastic front bit. I'm guessing it's the one in the metal housing? And how far should I insert the screwdriver to engage in the locking ring tabs? On the drivers side there doesn't seem to be anything obvious to engage with, just a lot of pretty solid metal lumps inside, none of which feel like they want to turn. And what way is 'counter-clockwise' as it doesn't say in the manual which way you shuold be facing?

(BTW - the hole on the drivers side mirror is larger than on the passenger side - is that relevant?)

I fiddled about for ages and nothing seemed to be happening on either side. Is it obvious when you've released the locking ring? Does it simply fall apart at that point?

It's probably blindingly obvious when you've done it once and seen the bits, but I haven't, yet....

So, I've gave up on that until you good folks give me some pointers, and turned my attention to the sunroof - you'll have to wait for that post to follow as that wasn't a very spectacular result either. Believe me it's not been a very productive afternoon.

If you are having difficulty seeing the mechanism, half fold the mirror back and undo the single socket cap screw which will relaease the mirror from the door and enable you to invert the mirror. Think yourself lucky, early mirrors had the glass clipped into the backing plate and it was a lucky owner who managed to remove the glass without cracking it
 
I've had the drivers side mirror off to have a look up inside, but still can't see anything that might resemble the locking ring.

I'll try the other side, as it might just be that I've been unlucky and had a look at at an 'odd' variant.

If it's the same as my 928 then the locking ring is about 75mm (3") in diameter, and you view it side on. You may of course have an early mirror that someone fitted to replace a damaged one. It really is a doddle to get the mirror off if it has the locking ring. Take a sturdy knife and ease, really ease the mirror out of the housing enough to be able to look to see if there are three pins attached to the mirror back. If they are there, you have an early type.
 
That's what I did yesterday evening, and lo and behold - they're early ones !!!!!

So I carefully prised them away (didn't break either glass!) and we're in business now. Will now spruce up and re-paint the bodies and that's another job ticked off the list.

I'm using a 944 Haynes manual (because it's a 924S) which states after 1985.5 the mirrors were changed to locking-ring type. I guessed that also meant mine, but having looked closely at the pictures I couldn't see much difference so thought maybe, just maybe, they are early ones. Bingo. I don't know if the information is 944 specific, I wouldn't have thought so, but regardless, my cars got push-fit glass.
