Misfiring, fixed, returned and finally identified

I have had long term problems with misfire - erratic, occasional, at tickover, at high revs.
I had started to think it was a head gasket issue but not all clues were there - no water in oil or oil in water but sometimes plug 1 looked very clean sometimes normal brown, compression good
I have replaced a lot of bits ( as they also neded doing - petrol filter, dis cap, leads, etc etc)
So I bought a Mr injector injector refurb kit off ebay for 12£. Fiddly to do but easy.
When I took the injector rail off - not one injector connector had a wire clip on it and one was cracked. All injectors were dirty, one had a different space washer thickness
Cleaned em up with carb cleaner, pulsed carb cleaner through. Replaced them - an absolute transformation in performance more revvy, more power , why did I not do this before!! misfire gone.
100 miles later - misfire returned with a vengance. Was it really the head gasket?
The misfire was there at tickover - yes you've guessed it the connector on #1 cylinder injector was not making proper contact, I've clipped it on with a cable tie while I get some new connectors, back to the improved perfomance!

On to other things -- MOT coming up and I don't like the loook of those sills aggh
