Mixing oils

Hi,

I have posted the same question on the technical forum, but maybe should go here.

The case is that due to an emergency, I have added semishyntetic oil (mobil 10/40) to my existing oil (mobil synthetic 5/40) I have added around 0.4l.

Should I drain the oil as soon as possible?

Thanks

I went to Mobil web site and it looks as it's not a great deal to mix them, of course is better not to do it, but 0,4l in 11l capacity shouldn't make a big difference.

Any other views?

As an emergency, it's better than having no oil. I would change the oil and filter at the next opportunity though.

I have received an answer from the Oilman (see Technical forum, Simon) telling me that both oils will mix and there is not a big issue.

Thanks Wibble

Apparently, I was told this by JZ Machtech, as the oil capacity is so great, you can actually run the level surprisingly low. So, 0.4 litres is not an emergency fill-up.

As we know, the 964 is dry sumped with a separate oil tank. which is tall & thin. If you are on track and the car is leaning over or you are asking for greater amounts of oil, then the level in the tank may be more of an issue, but for general use, it should not be a problem.

I was told that they did a top up on a 964 and added 5 litres, even this was not an issue, for the reasons mentioned above.

Don't panic, drive normally and pick up the correct oil when you get the chance.

I was also told the oil level guage is surprisingly accurate, i.e. if it says you have some oil, you most likely have got some!

No doubt the more technically minded amoungst you will be able to give better explanations than I have done [X(]
