Model Identification, is it a Lux or S or S2 ?

I am at a bit of a loss at what model my 944 is.
The reg doc only states 944. The previous owner fitted full leather to all seats so the trim level is no help. It's a 1988 2.5 litre manual, black interior, guards red exterior.
Can anyone suggest how I can nail down the exact model?

If it's a 2.5 from 88 then it's either a Lux or an S.
If it's a S then it will have two camshafts (16V), if it's a Lux it will have one (8V).

Thom means a lux or an S [:D]. The S2s are 3 litre.

I knew he did really!

I guess it doesn't have an S after the 944 badge on the rear.

Is it not possible to tell from the engine?

It will most likely be either an S (Venteiler:which it will say on the side of the car on the rubbing strips) or a Lux. Have you got a picture of the engine?

Does the engine have any balls below 4k and go like a bat out of hell after that, or is it almost the opposite?

An S2 will have the later front end, as in my avatar. Post a pic of the engine and it's easy to tell an 8-valve lux from an "S".

I know it's only an 8 valve (single camshaft) engine.
There was no 944 badge on the rear when I bought it, I've just put a new one on.

Then that's your answer - there was effectively only one 8v NA model with a 2.5. Then there was the 2.7 too.
There are various spec options but all will have the older style front.
