Model interchangeability

Trackrod944

As the owner of a trackday 944S, I am constantly scouring eBay for good deals on parts (of which there are plenty), but am ignorant as to which parts differ on the various 944 models, apart from the obvious engine differences. Are exhausts, suspension etc. interchangeable? Anyone got any answers or advice?

hi m8 as an owner of a 944s 1988 E plate 2.5 16 v i know that the front wish bones are completly different including the bottm ball joint as the standard 944 balljoint is still used on many vw golf suspensions i am unsure of the shocks and anti roll bar though.......and a wishbone is £300 new but hartek will do you a recon for around £175 as you cant buy a balljoint sepperate for a 944S. the 944S susension went on to develop the 968 suspension set up. hope this helps a little.............

Many parts are interchangeable but often not in isolation and you can also look at parts off the 968.

As you have an S IIRC it has ABS hubs so Boxster wheels will fit.

968 M030 anti roll bars will fit but you need all the correct bushes.

S2 (non M030)/220 Turbo callipers and discs should fit.

You should fit 968 wishbone rear mounts if you haven't got them already.

Turbo M030 adjustable suspension will fit - if you can find any. Ditto Turbo LSD gearbox.

If you get late model Turbo font hub assemblies you can bolt on Medium Black Turbo callipers and 928 S4 discs. Or you can fit 928 GTS callipers (Big blacks) with 928 GTS or 964 3.6 Turbo discs or 993TT callipers (Big Reds). You can do a Medium Black, Big Black or Big Red Upgrade with radial mounts if you can't get late 250 hub assemblies.

968 door mirrors and handles look nice.

Have a look at http://www.cannell.co.uk Rick has a modified S which has a lot of redundant parts off his modified Turbo so that would be a good guide in the first instance.

Anything with a turbo or newer than 1987 doesn't have VW type suspension arms.

Alloy arms are interchangeable between any MY'87-on 944 and 968, MY'86 Turbos had unique alloy arms. Anything pre-'87 uses basically all different front suspension to everything post '87, the exception being the crossmember.

Thanks for the info guys. How about exhausts? Obviously excluding the manifold; in theory, no real reason for different types is there?

Probably not much in it between NA version exhausts, though there could be for all I actually know. The Turbo exhaust is totally different of course.
