modification to extract ozone

It was recently pointed out that my car is missing the standard modification to extract ozone from the twin distributors. How important is it that I recetfy this quickly and what is involved?

Kevin,

The distributor venting modification was introduced by Porsche to prevent the build-up of ozone within the distributor because it attacks the material of the secondary distributor drive belt. Given that your car has been running without the mod for the best part of 15 years I would think it advisable to get the belt examined and/or changed at the same time as installing the essential venting kit. The venting kit itself is only about £10 and is very easy to fit yourself. The belt, on the other hand is another matter altogether!! Porsche will not sell you a belt although some indies will now do a belt change - but it's a fair bit of labour. Not so bad if you can do it yourself but it means dismantling the distributors and rebuilding with a new securing pin.

BTW, have you registered your car with the Jubilee Registry (http://www.jubi.pocg.de/)??

Regards

Dave

When was the breather pipe modification introduced. I'm suprised that Kevin's 1993 car hasn't got it. Does this mean that no 964s came out of the factory with the modification?

Steve,

I can't find any specific reference to the date of introduction other than "late in the model life". 964 production did go on until 1994 so I, too, am a little surprised that a Celebration car would not have it.

[edit] Since I wrote that reply I've found a copy of the TSB issued by Porsche in March 1994 on the subject which indicates that production units from August 13th 1993 were fitted with the ventilation kit.

[edit2[ Just to preempt your question, Steve, the TSB's are available online here. It's a very useful reference from time to time.

That's good information Dave. It explains why 993s had it fitted as standard. On the presumption that celebrations were introduced for MY93 rather than just 1993 then of course a number of them (including Kevin's) would have left the factory without the mod.

Mine was actually registered in august 93 so just missed out!

Dave - i'm in the process of registering with the jubilee register - just taken a bit longer than planned

Based on discussion above when next service comes up in a few months i'll ensure the distributor belt is investigated and venting modification fitted

thanks for the prompt advice

Does anybody know where to get the vent kit from other than Beryln, they want £7 for the kit and £10 for delivery which I consider a bit of a rip off. Can this be bought from the OPC ?

Many thanks from a newbie
