I'm not sure if this has been done before but I thought it may be of help to those amongst us who like to improve their cars be that in performance or looks by starting a thread giving details of said cars here.
My car has had many changes over the 11 years that I have owned it starting with my first mod which was a Lindsey boost enhancer to it's present setup today.
During that time I as I'm sure many of you guys have learnt from sometimes painful experience about what to do and more importantly what not to do in their hunt for more power.
The figures given here for my car are from 2007 , she has had many more mods since then and now faster than ever but you need to keep an eye on whats going on under the bonnet to keep your car going well.
Some of you may remember last years dyno run where my car was down nearly 100bhp which we couldn't find. Even after a complete change of all vac lines on the day as suggested by the tech guys on site I was still down 40bhp with very strange boost readings and most of that recovered bhp I'm sure was just from the settings being adjusted on the dyno rather than any improvement in my cars problem.
When I got home I handed it over to my son to sort out , after a few minutes he diagnosed a faulty MBC ( manual boost controller), I asked him to see what could be done and on further examination the MBC literary fell apart in his hands when taken apart.
That's just one example of how our cars may seem fine but in fact are not, after seeing the state of the insides of my MBC I would recommend all you guys using one to check it out , a service kit from LR is around $15 which is very little to pay to keep things in top condition.

Pete

PS: I'll update this as I add more which happens far too often if I'm honest , don't tell SWMBO though"¦ïŠ

Edit:

Plans for the future:

Vitesse VFLEX upgrade
large bore exhaust ( prob the main thing keeping me below 400bhp...lol)
LR stage 2 intercooler
968 front mounts
re-index rear torsion bar
Engine rebuild ( compression still reads as new but rear balance shaft seals need doing at some stage plus few other bits so when I get the time and money the engine will be removed from car and stripped down, I won't really know what i'll do to it till that stage but certainly will do a lot of cosmetic stuff such as polish and powder coat block head , not to mention all new bearings etc etc )
the list will go on and probably never stop...[8D]

.....Performance Silicone Hoses (PSH)....

Ha ha! See what he did there. [:D] So none of you get carried away I know that PSH and PSH are unrelated.

Beaky spec is here but needs updating again.

nice spec John and you reminded me of some bits that I forgot... edited now..:)

say hi to Belinda and Peter for me mate..:)

I'm still only at that stage. Any tips for how best to adjust those to suit the car? I've never been sure I'm getting the most from having it in place.

Mine used to bring in the overboost quite often , I did however get a big improvement by upgrading the blow off valve, this made a big difference and allowed me to tweek the boost enhancer a little more..[8D]

Ok Pete, here you go

My car:

1989 Porsche 944 Turbo 250bhp

Engine:

At 120,000 miles a bolt came loose in the standard airbox and detonated into the turbocharger then scored up the bore of cyl #1 so it went down to JMG for a rebuild and new turbocharger. At the time Jon could not source any oversized pistons to enable my original engine to be bored out so we went down the route of fitting a 3.0L engine from an S2, but as the months went past this morphed into a 3.2 built by SimonP at SPS using interlocking nikasil liners.

The engine now:

JE 108mm pistons
Carillo Rods
2.7 head with larger valves
SPS hybrid ball bearing turbocharger
Vittese MAF with piggy back ECU
Tial 46mm dual port wastegate
Greddy Profec B electronic boost controller
Dynojet Wide band Commander
Turbo Dynamics dump valve
PSH 3" intake hoses to K&N filter
9xx uprated intercooler
72lb injectors
3bar FPR
Bosch Motorsport 044 fuel pump
KEP SII pressure plate and 930 clutch disk
Mapped by myself to record 393bhp and 480lbft at 17psi boost
about to have a full 3" exhaust system fitted then re-measured at 20psi boost

Suspension/brakes:

Koni adjustable's front and back
Big Black 928GTS/993TT brakes
Mintex fast road pads

Tyres:

Kumho V70A soft compound 235/40 ZR17 front
Kumho V70A soft compound 275/40 ZR17 rear

I found myself having overboost problems after fitting it too. Dialed it down somewhat and it now runs just fine. I suppose I need to dial it back up bit by bit until I find the overboost problem returns and then settle on just below that point. Good old trial and error.

I like this idea.
I should be picking up a 1986 944 turbo running Tial DPW and chips. Current owner has graphs for 290bhp.
I want to upgrade this still further as time goes on, so this thread will give me ideas.

A good idea.

Hi rav and thanks for your comments... you've given me another idea that in being to add planned future upgrades too... hope the list doesn't get too long

Also hope SWMBO never see's it[&:]

I'm not sure if this has been done before but I thought it may be of help to those amongst us who like to improve their cars be that in performance or looks

I'm way down on the power side of things, but my car's had a fair amount of little tweaks done on the interior and exterior. Just things for comfort and looks, really. It's an '89 Turbo, so already has the adjustable shocks, forged wheels, medium black brakes and so on.

Exterior
Tinted windows (ultra-light smoke fronts, light smoke rears, full smoke rear hatch glass)
Smoked rear light clusters
Smoked side repeaters
Smoked front indicators
Rear wiper delete

Interior
Shortened gearstick
FlamingEye LED dash lighting
Painstakingly rebuilt LED clock (fiddly little thing took me forever)
Becker Grand Prix head unit
Becker iPod link invisibly tunnelled through into the armrest/cassette holder
Becker Bluetooth mic wired into the empty DIN space below the head unit
JBL component front speakers
Alpine amplifier vertically mounted inside the spare wheel beneath boot carpet
9" subwoofer mounted in a made-to-measure plywood bass box inside the drivers side boot storage cubby

Oily bits
Stainless steel exhaust system (not sure which brand, previous owner fitted it"”it's very quiet!)
Custom short shift kit at rear gear linkage (previous owner fabricated it himself)
Adjustable wastegate, currently set to 17psi (in theory"”it's a tricky one to be precise with)
Lyndsey Racing boost enhancer

I know it's pointless trying to predict the future, but things I'm sort-of considering for the coming few years include a custom built dog guard to fit the back (sort of like a half roll cage, right? No? What?), the Deutsch-9 rear seat delete (again, a dog transporting consideration), and something along the lines of a Promax level two kit"”a Tial dual port wastegate with some sort of manual boost controller and all the chip, hose and cable replacements that make sense alongside such endeavours.

Not as spectacular as some but here goes....

Exterior Cup 1 replica alloys, Front Splitter, Clear Indicators all round

Interior RS Steering Wheel, Jager LED dash lights (blue), Alpine stereo.

Engine Promax Chip, DP Wastegate, Bailey DV30 bypass valve, Apex I Electronic Boost Controller

Exhaust/Suspension Wortec 3" Switchable Exhaust, 968CS M030 Suspension (refurbished)

Future ? Currently contemplating; KW V3 suspension, MAF (type as yet undecided), plus sundry smaller items. Think that will do for now !

Hi Jon

nice setup ,.. how do you find the Wortec?... it's one that I've been considering myself

Pete

My mod list is listed in my signature [EDIT: 'bits and bobs' consist of LR MBC, Piston recirc valve, LR vac hose kit, KLR Industries ARB stiffening brackets, EBC yellow pads (rubbish)). So far i've found it to be a very consistent and reliable setup, though does feel like it lacks a bit above about 70mph (but still goes well).

Bought and on the shelf but not fitted:-
Innovate wideband AFR kit
Apexi AVC-R EBC (how are you getting on with yours??)
New sunroof switch from the OPC (£40!! ouch)

Kit currently on order:-
Custome Engineered Performance billet fuel rail and billet damper (black anodised finish) with braided fuel hoses (a bit of bling really but does have some benefits through improved fuel flow through the rail and hence cooler fuel temps)
Jager LED dash kit

Mod wish list (getting pushed more and more to the right due to expanding family):-
- Vitesse MAF with Piggyback & V-Flex (or if I fancy a 'project' a Link Storm standalone running MAP & fully sequential fuel injection with Link Knock Block for knock protection - but this would really require alot of work to get running so unlikely)
- Wasted spark ignition (if I go Vitesse route) or CDI coil over ignition (if I go standalone) to get rid of the dizzy cap and rotor arm.
- SPS turbo
- Wortec or Hayward & Scott full 3" exhaust
- 996 turbo 18" wheels with the current 17" wheels to be shod with Toyo 888's for trackday's

Pure filth (and therefore too expensive) wish list:-
- Pauer Tuning worked over head (larger valves, flowed etc)
- Custom Engineered Performance exhaust manifold
- LSD

Ultimate aim - to create a pretty stock looking 944 turbo from the exterior (minus wheels, ride height and exhaust pipe tip shape of course) but with some nice mods under the skin with the ultimate aim to bring the car's performance upto date retaining the 2.5ltr 8v configuration with reduced lag and circa 350bhp at 1bar boost (maybe 1.2 bar if needed) to retain good engine reliability and longevity.

Nice setup Scott[;)]

Funny reading your ultimate aim was like describing my own car..[:D] I too want the exterior to remain standard and my car is making at least the 368 it made two years ago although I suspect it's a lot higher now.

As for the Apexi AVCR well what can I say??...along my long road of mods which has been over 11 years now you sometimes come across a mod that stands out amongst the others and gives you that big WOW factor, the Apexi is such a mod.
Put it on now without delay it will transform your car , hell it will transform any car with or without mods , it's rated as the best boost controller in the world and I have to say I agree with that very bold statement.
I have yet to get my car on the rollers to set her up properly with the mods over the last two years so I'm sure it will give far more than I have now but this baby holds boost like you wouldn't believe.
I took advantage while I was in Texas a month ago and had one delivered to my hotel from Lindsey Racing, it was worth every $ and more, I'm still learning how to use it but I have now set up my Boost and Duty levels, my start duty level , my boost at any given RPM in the N/E settings and my Feedback setting which currently are quite low. I have not done the learn gear mode yet as they reccommend to take it to 6000rpm in fourth which i tried but at close to 130mph at around 5000 I decided to wait till I can get it back to Wayne.Theres more to this controller but to much to list here.
When Wayne set my car up some years ago with the mods that it had at the time it was fast.. no it was very fast but with the Apexi added it's now in a different league altogether.
The good thing about all this is that it took less than an hour to install and the car felt great , no it felt fantastic from the time I turned the ignition key, the best way that I can describe it is by saying it's like taking a brand new supercar out for it's very first drive , it is really that good , like driving a brand new car. Ultra responsive and very very smooth.

Install it now Scott , you will have a very big smile on your face when you do..... [8D]

have fun..

Pete

Well with an endorsement like that I'll need to get my backside in gear. The only thing that has put me of so far is that it seems like a bit of a faff to set up (the instruction manual is rubbish) so I was worried about overboosting while playing with settings. In a way it seems too clever for it's own good as I basically want simple functionality for it to try to hit and maintain a target max boost as early as possible and hold it for as long as possible. I'm not really after setting different boost pressures for different gears or a boost profile over the rev range - my turbo will determine that all by itself as it wont be able to maintain 15psi boost much above 4500rpm no matter what boost control device I have fitted!. But there seems to be so many different ways you can set it up and i'm not sure what would be best for my application. So I seem to have been in a continual internet research mode since I got it last year. Anyway, you've got me thinking about it again.

I agree with you the manual is crap but there are some very good guides to be found on the web , just search google for Apexi AVCR setup. I found a very good one on a jap website... japncrazy or something like that. You'll also find a list of basic settings used for a 944 on OZ951's webpage, use these as a starting point and set the boost low to begin with, duty too. Once you get up and running you can play with those settings more , I would however reccommend that you get that Innovate AFR installed at the same time first..[8D]
Once you decide on a boost level check that it reaches it with a good boost gauge, the factory one is not good enough, I use a stepper motor electronic gauge with peak read and able to give an audio warning when a predetermined level of boost has been reached. If you find your not reaching the boost level that you have set on the AVCR increase the duty till you do. Mines set at 1.3 bar and I know I can go higher still but it's safe enough for me, btw the apexi will go to 30psi if you so desire...not that i'd ever try such a thing..[8D] but then i treat any setbacks as an excuse to spend yet more money on the car...

well it works with SWMBO at least.....hehe

Pete

ps if you encouinter any problems please feel free to give me a call, if I don't know the answer I'm sure my son will, he knows far more than I'll ever know...lol

how do you find the Wortec?... it's one that I've been considering myself

I love mine - it is very well made and the tailpipe looks like it belongs on the car if you know what I mean. I know alot of folk on here aren't fans of "noisey" exhausts but for me its added alot to the driving experience, especially as the engine note is far from electrifying of course. The "quiet" mode still has a nice crackle to it on gear changes and lift off while "loud" really does have an additional snarl to it. Neither are boomy at all and being a full 3" system flow very well too. [:)]

Thanks for the info Jon , it's much appreciated , I suspect that the exhaust will need to be my next upgrade, I need a bigger hole to let those horses really fly...[8D]
