The rest of the afternoon will be at your own pace with plenty to visit (see below). The directions for the day will give details of the routes back to Ambleside, and major routes north and south.
Muncaster Gardens
Between the Irish Sea and Hardknott Pass, Muncaster is located in one of Europe's most remote and dramatic landscapes. The wild setting of ancient woods and soaring mountains provides opportunities to explore the designated paths and walks. Try the awe inspiring Wild Walk or the fascinating Sino-Himalayan Trail. Walking boots or stout footwear recommended.
The Castle
Muncaster Castle, home to the Pennington family for 800 years, is a genuine treasure trove of art and antiques. Its Great Hall, Octagonal Library and elegant Dining Room are all windows on a grand past. But Muncaster's wild history reveals a flipside to life in a stately home. The castle evolved from the Pele Tower, built to repel marauding Scots. Those who stay here say it is haunted by ghosts, including the legendary Tom Fool.
World Owl Centre
Large and small, fierce and friendly, beautiful and strange, owls are wonders of wildlife. At Muncaster, headquarters of the World Owl Trust, you will find one of the largest collections of these thrilling birds in existence.
The centre is home to a diverse range - from bizarre fish owls to diminutive pygmy owls which are not much bigger than a sparrow.
Meet The Birds Daily at 2.30pm (location varies and flying is not always possible)
Watch the wild herons feeding during "Heron Happy Hour" at 4.30pm. This really is wildlife on the wing!
Meadow Vole Maze
Imagine being a meadow vole - just two and a half inches tall - living in meadowland, where dangers lurk at every turn. It's no picnic. But down at the Meadow Vole Maze the secret world of wildlife makes for a wild experience. Here, where the grass is seven feet tall, you'll find out what life is like for these tiny creatures. You'll also meet Max MeadowVole. He needs help to get home safely. So answer the questions, follow the path and guide him back. You could win a prize and you'll discover the truth about meadowland.
With voices by Harry Enfield, this is not a true maze where you can get lost. Designed for the young at heart it is indoors with areas of darkness which children under 5 may find frightening, so we recommend close adult supervision.
Muncaster Plant Centre
There is now an exciting new addition for the horticultural enthusiast visiting the historic gardens at Muncaster.
As part of the restoration of the old Walled Garden, adjacent to the owl centre, our Head Gardener, Jason Haine and his team have opened a retail plant centre.
We have started off with around 200 different varieties of hardy plant and plan to increase this number dramatically over the first few years. Primulas will be available from the spring including Primula 'Ravenglass Vermillion', unique to the area. Herbs and vegetable plants will be seasonally available.
Many of the species and varieties of Rhododenron, Camellia and Magnolia, to name but a handful, already growing in the gardens are scarce or unavailable for sale in the UK or the world for that matter. Our aim is to continue with a propagation programme to increase the number of truly 'Muncaster Grown' plants available. We have installed a 17 square metre propagating bench and already there will be some specialities available during the 2006 season.
Along side the plant centre there will be a fully functioning kitchen garden with year round crops. The produce will supplement the needs of 'Creeping Kate's Kitchen' so that visitors can enjoy 'Muncaster Grown' salads and vegetables. We are developing a Physic and Herb garden along the South East facing wall. This will contain plants used in current medicine, aromatic herbs and some ancient remedies from the likes of Gerrard's herbal and Culpepper's writings.
