more bang per buck!

Ive been without my old 930 turbo for over a year now and starting to miss its 360bhp and only 1200kgs, not been on the forum for a while either.
anyway , its time to start thinking about another car for 2009, tempted with ultimas and supra turbos, but in my mind is a nice turbo 2 1992 ish with a pair or recaro spg bucket seats that i can take to le-mans, porsche museum visit and a trip to the 'ring, ill need to watch the threads for some company, also want to do the odd trackday and have booked march 6th rs day at oulton so need to start shopping quick. prices seem to be £25,000 for a good one and it wont take much to get 360bhp again. anyway the question is , now the 996 turbo is under the £30,000 mark should i look at those instead ? I much prefer the shape of the air cooled curves but the 6 speed car would have easy 450bhp and 200 mph potential, if only i could grow to like its shape! then again a set of GT2 bumper and wings and 20 inch wheels would help...
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/828819.htm seems good value and only a couple of grand more than a 1992 car!
unless any of you guys have a 964 turbo with 420bhp conversion tucked up in the garage your not using?
wots your thoughts please guys?

The 964 for `feel` excitement and looks
the 996 for comfort long distance and everyday usability. By the time you get the excitement its bye bye licence !
Both are very tempting at current falling prices so try a few out and let us know how you get on.

yes i found the old 930 great, second gear on an empty country road to the red line was 90 mph change into 3rd for a second or two and i was risking a ban, never tracked it though because of the brakes will track the next one. think the 964 running costs will be less but will only do 4000 miles next year in it..

At 4k miles running costs should be cheap enough especially with fuel set to be cheap again for a good while.
I loved my 930 and 964t on trackdays in the dry.Wet was a bit too challenging for me !
Have you tried a GT3 ? A track biased high revving 911 sounds good , something i need to check out soon.
Anticipation is half the pleasure, its a great time to be a buyer.

good gt3 is close to £40,000 and i cant justify spending that for 4000 miles a year use, come on guys any more comments while the turkeys cookin? dont leave it all to jonny boy

Not sure if a 4WD 996tt would do it for me. The 997tt has a better diff though. I know people have disconnected the front drive with 993tt's.

i know its a big heavy car (996tt) but with a pair of light gt3 seats and fresh suspension kit hmmm. suppose i need to get in one but dont want to waste anyones time on a test drive tho..

996's seem amazing value atm. Not to everyones taste, but the prices must make one worth it. Im sure some tinkering by 9M or similar would enliven the experience in the future too ?

just want to go and buy this (if seller ever answers my emails)

i could kid on im mike lowery in bad boys but, when it comes down to it ,it seems a lot of money for a LHD car in the current climate, or im i just being too sensible?

I feel your pain - there is simply too much choice at £30K. I was briefly tempted by 996TT's but how much further will they fall ? And yes, I think you're being too sensible :) I wanted to look at this car at one stage but I'm now being gravitated towards a 993TT instead :)

Seems pricey for a LHD to me.

Wasn't Marks car for sale at that price? Black, RHD and some go faster goodies.

Arguably it's actually too cheap for a LHD 965 - on the continent they seem to start at around £30k now...look at mobile.de and you'll see what I mean. Low mileage cars seem to be the equivalent of £40-£50k now!

dont know why its needed an engine rebuild if its low miles tho
yes black car at e porsche looked good, money not quite in place then tho
cheers guys thanks for your comments

Probably a broken head stud - quite common on 965s and often seems to be age, as much as mileage, related.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Keith

Hope you are well. I did a few sessions at Donington in a 996 Turbo and while it was quick, it was no where near as much fun as the 64RS. I've also done a lot of raod miles in one and it is a great all rounder but for select drives and the odd track day I don't think it is as memorable. While certainly good value, I think you might be dissappointed. I know the GT3 is a little more money but I think you should try one, good road cars that still feel special and fantastic on track. Its probably nearly fully depreciated too (unlike a 996 T) so probaby won't cost you as much to run.

Have fun.

yes funny how power and fun dont always go hand in hand.....most of this has come about as i have lost my second garage, but suppose i could buy a carcoon and keep the 964 too as its been great fun, relatively successful (13 trophies) and cheap to run, would be sorry to see it go ,and hard to replace, but it wasnt the most comfortable car to drive to le mans this year. hmmm..... again..

tending towards 996 turbo now, but want to fit gt3 seats and rear cage so need to keep some cash back for that, and 6 weeks to oulton rs day and no car to use ...oops

Keith,

A 996 will certainly give you more bang per buck.

Good Luck I am sure will find a nice car there is enough to chose from.

4 weeks to trackday and no car
money burning hole
battle thru snow tues to see one
see what its like but it needs a service and mot hmmmm
