(More) first impressions....

You must be bored of people gushing about their new cars by now, but it doesn't happen to me every day so please indulge me...

After 4 years of a pre facelift 2.7, I finally got my mitts on the new steed yesterday afternoon. Collected from Bow, East London, my new 987 3.2 S looked stunning in the bright sunshine, just awsome. The proportions are so much more butch and agressive, than the feminine stance of the old one.

On the move, I was astonished as to how different it felt despite having 2 long test drives and a test drive plus over the past 6 months. It is SO MUCH quicker, despite my self imposed limit of 3500 revs and the noise is ridiculous. I really wanted to test the BOSE but kept hardly put it on at all such was the effect of the engine note.I had to go through the Limehouse tunnel 3 times to do the noise thing, and also to test the Litronics....

Good points are too many to list, and coming from a 2001 2.7 into a spanking 6 speed S is like graduating from a Nissan Micra. The smaller sports steering wheel is also a must have, and it makes the experience akin to driving a sports car and not navigating the Queen Mary.

Only one niggle to report - my left arm fouls against the bolster of the seat more than I expected, but thats probably because I'm not used to either sports seats or the six speed box. I hope the box loosens a bit because in that respect, my 50k mike 2.7 was superb - the rifle bolt feel all the journos go on about.

Spec is:

Seal grey
Black leather sports seats
Black hood
BOSE and wind def
19" Carreras and coloured centres
Climate
Sports steering wheel
Litronics

Only downer was that the OPC hadn't stamped the PDI in the service book, and forgotten to put the BOSE/head unit instruction manual in the document wallet.

Painful part now, is having to walk past it each morning to catch the tube! I'm off to Bath for the weekend with my g/friend so will give it a proper run out. Oh, and on another subject, the on-board computer is telling me I'm getting 23.5 after 100 miles....

Finally, if the guy in the black 996 C4S reg "PLA70" - sorry for not having a little play, but the car was less than an hour old!

Thanks for reading this far!!

Er... yes! I didn't mean that in a bad way, honest! I think the 986 look lovely, and I would categorise it in the "delicate and feminine" camp (no pun intended!) with the likes of the E Type, Ferrari 355 and say the Maserati GT. The 987 on the other hand is less beautiful but more agressive, say in the genre of the Audi Quattro, Integrale, Merc CLK-DTM etc - all big wheels and bluff surfaces.

Anyway, if it fuels healthy debate...!!

Dapster,

Congratulations - your car is very similar to mine so I know what you are going through!! Looks great in seal grey.

I notice you are looking to keep revs below a 'self imposed' 3500 - the advice I received from OPC West London on collection was to make sure I kept the revs down below 5000 for the first 1000 miles but, at the same time, make sure that I used all of the rev range right up to the 5000 level as this would aid the flexibility of the engine thereafter.

Enjoy - the weather looks as if it is improving so plenty of opportunity for those top down miles!!

damn with all these 'impressions' going on.....

this bosxter forum should be renamed the Claude Monet Art Club [8D]

986 (curves) v's 987 (straight lines). Yup, give me those feminine curves any day of the week [;)]!

Am I the only one only one whose a tad disappointed that Porsche seem to have joined the straight lines stylist club along with Audi, VW, BMW, Ford, & even Vauxhall etc - particularly with interiors (though I do recognise quality has improved). What's wrong with being different to the crowd?

And what about the interior door handles - reassuring nice metallic Alloy in a 986, plastic in a 987 ....[:(]!

Have to agree Darren when my wife and I were on the test drive with both commented on the interior door handles unfortunatley that was the only thing of the whole car we didn't like. Personally I love the new Boxster shape it just looks awesome I liked the 986 when I had one but feel it has now evolved and has done so in a positive way but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so what one person loves one person dislikes and vice versa. I am hoping there will be an after market ali pack with real metal to replace the door handles at some point...[;)] they are a complete disgrace on a car of this value and prestige.

When you see the 986 parked alongside a 987 I think Porsche couldn't have done a better job of evolution as every minute change is for the better IMO
