More Power for Exclusive Boxster and Cayman ModelsPorsche Extends Range of Mid-Engined Sports Cars

Stuttgart. Introducing two new models, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, are rounding off their range of dynamic mid-engined sports cars at the top. The two new models, the Porsche Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 and the Cayman S Sport, develop 303 bhp (223 kW) from 3.4 litres, eight horsepower more than the respective S models.

Both new models come with a wide range of exclusive equipment highlighted by the particularly striking design of the car and will be available at the dealership as of early September.

With the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and the Boxster RS 60 Spyder special series now completely sold out, Porsche are entering the market with new special models based on the prize-winning Boxster S and Cayman S. Only a few weeks ago, Porsche's roadster model won first prize in the readers' choice of the German motor magazine "sport auto" in its class of the most sporting convertibles up to Euro 80,000. And in a representative customer enquiry by US market research institute

J.D. Power, the Porsche Boxster also came first in its category as the best model.
The Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 now sets new standards, the production colour Carrara White, for a long time one of the highlights in Porsche's colour range, now receiving additional emphasis in the new Boxster: The star-spoke rims on the 19-inch SportDesign wheels featured as standard, the side air intakes, the centre console and the dials on the three round instruments are also finished in white. Sporting grey stripes extending lengthwise along the body accentuate the brilliant white finish of the car in the same sophisticated style as the red rear lights.

A unique accessory coming with the car is likewise an homage to the white rev counter and speedometer: The Porsche Design Edition 2 Chronograph men's wristwatch from the Dashboard Collection features a white face and was developed especially for this very special Boxster.

By contrast, the colours of the roof and leather upholstery featured as standard are really classical throughout: Stone Grey and Black.

The Cayman S Sport is more colourful, coming as standard in the GT3 colours Orange and Green and proudly bearing its model designation on the side. Further colours available on this special model are Black, Indian Red, Speed Yellow and Carrara White, as well as Arctic Silver Metallic available at extra cost.

As on the GT3, black rims, exterior mirrors and air intake grids form a sporting contrast also characterising the interior through the black interior design package and the circular instruments without the usual binnacle on top.

Over and above the 303-bhp flat-six power unit, particularly PASM Porsche Active Suspension Management featured as standard, lowering the entire car by ten millimetres, as well as five-millimetre spacers beneath the 19-inch SportDesign wheels provide an impressive touch of power and performance.

Bi-xenon headlights, the Sports Chrono Package and sports seats all coming as standard enhance the particularly sporting appearance of the car in genuine GT3 look, further enhanced by the sports exhaust system together with a twin-chamber exhaust tailpipe and alcantara finish on the gearshift lever, the handbrake, and the rim of the GT3 steering wheel.

These upgraded versions of the Boxster S and Cayman S are limited to an exclusive series proudly bearing out their edition number on a placard on the glove box. Judging by the experience gained with the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and Boxster RS 60 Spyder, demand for these exclusive new models is expected to be substantial.

Production of the Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 will amount to
500 units at a price in the German market of Euro 65,539 (including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications), production of the Cayman S Sport will be limited to 700 units at a price of Euro 69,942 (again including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications).

Story from Porsche Cars UK Website which also has photos...

Speaking as someone who owns a Boxster S 550 Anniversary Edition ..... its about time Porsche stopped doing these minor facelift special editions :0(

I think they are overdoing it and cheapening the brand ... reminiscent of the multiple Ford Fiesta 'Special' Editions on the road :0(

The new Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 ... appears to be all the bits of the RS60 but on a white car ... call me cynical but did they have bits left over?

Ditto - and I quite agree! This run is even smaller than ours - just 500 units (unless that's just UK or Europe). At least the 550 was done to mark a pukka anniversary, not just to flog off the last of the current model!

Speaking from some one who spec'd (from scratch) and bought a 3.4L Polar Silver with a Sports Design body kit, 19" Carrera Rims, Chrome Plated Stainless Steel Exhaust Pipe, Stainless Steel Entry Door Guards Ocean Blue roof yadda yadda yadda spec things when the 3.4 was first launched and which Porsche then "stole the spec" and "called a Boxster Sport".. I am (a) not suprised and (b) annoyed and (c) something else :D

These "Special" Editions for more money new and very little difference when used are IMO cheapening the "brand" something Porsche use to be concerned about but are now more interested in £$'s than exclusivity or originality.

Next we will see Carrera White being offered on the SPECIAL colour list which is generally made up from discontinued old standard colours that now demand a hefty premium [:D]

Shame, when Porsche decided to mimic Ford, Vauxhall, Renault etc with "Specials", they didn't also mimic the 3 year standard warranties these other guys willingly give [:'(] now that coming from Porsche really would have been "SPECIAL" unlike those ridiculous viper stripes on the run out Box

These "Special" Editions for more money new and very little difference when used...

Reading the old press releases, at least the 550 Aniversary was a bit of a bargain in terms of what they included over an equivalent-spec'd 986 when it was announced. But as you say, whether they ever attract a premium on the used market is another matter. Going by the used car finder on the Porsche website, they don't.

Amen to that!

Jealous that you can't afford one of the umpteen variations of Porsche's new 911? Can't get hold of the sold-out Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and Boxster RS60 Spyder? Never fear, because Porsche has the answer for you, with new special edition Boxster S and Cayman S models.

The new Porsche Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 (breathe) and the Cayman S Sport both now develop 303bhp from their 3.4-litre engines "" eight horsepower more than in "˜S' guise. Those power gains come from the same sports exhaust tweaks that made the RS60 Spyder sound spectacular.

Hold on. Tell me about this Porsche Boxster first. Isn't it a bit 1980s in white?
Carrera White in fact, and the phrase "˜greed is good' does spring to mind. In true Henry Ford style it's your one choice of colour, though grey racing stripes down the sides and over the top of the car help set it off.

The red rear lights are lifted from the RS60, while the Edition 2 also gives you white 19-inch alloys, white side air intakes and, you guessed it, a white centre console and white dials. Finally, to make sure everyone knows you've got a special edition Boxster the car also comes with men's Porsche Design Edition 2 Chronograph wristwatch, from their romantically titled Dashboard Collection. Of course, it's white.

The Boxster S Design Edition 2 won't be coming to the UK though, but European prices start at £51,896. Yes, that's £52k for a Boxster, nearly £12k more than a regular S!

Right, enough of that nonsense. What about this RS-inspired Cayman?

If you own an GT3 RS then you're probably horrified, but we quite like this Cayman S. It's definteily a better use of the RS script than on Swedish special-edition VW vans and Transybberian Cayenne rally cars. Plus it's coming to the UK.

For £49,890 (a mere £5640 more than the standard car) you get the aforementioned black graphics and the choice of green, orange, red, yellow or black paint. Silver will cost you more though.

PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) is standard, lowering the car by 10mm, while 5mm wheel spaces give the Sport a wider footprint. Other exterior tweaks include black wing mirrors and 19-inch black wheels. Inside you'll find a GT3-esque wheel and gearstick covered in Alcantara, the Sports Chrono Package and leather-trimmed sports seats.

Just 700 Cayman S Sports and 500 Boxster S Sport Editions 2s will be made. Porsche calls it "˜rounding off the range', but we can't help but think that there are some idle thumbs in Stuttgart this summer. And some happy accountants"¦

I looked at the RS60 ..... at the base price of sbout £45K, added the extras my 550 had, and it came to more like £52K

It didn't even come with litronics or leather as standard

Special Edition cars with very few included special feature

Surely no one buys a standard car at £45K with out extras, they would never sell it on ?

I could be wrong, but the reason I think Porsche are releaseing exclusive Boxster and Cayman Models, is because it's trying to use up as many old parts as possible before the new 987 Gen 2 comes out in the next few months, then the old 987 prices will drop like bricks.

The 987 gen2 model (I think) will be fitted with the NEW direct injection engines based on the same 997 gen2 block (40% less parts, no IMS or RMS failures!!), with much more power, MPG and less CO2 emissions.

And the best thing will be the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

I think that highly likely. And there was obviously a crate-load of white paint found at the back of the warehouse too...

I'm going to have my eye on one of these in a few year's time! That PDK is one incredible feat of engineering.

Just don't try it with the lid down and no seatbelt. You'll be left on the road and the Porsche will end up in Eastbourne.

Object to your comments re white paint - our second white boxster is terrific - no problem selling first 996 s/h.
Has more impact, especially with terracotta full leather interior. Silver is nondescript and boring!

Every other Porsche in Florida is white! By the way new model with direct injection will be available there this month according to Suncoast Porsche. I agree "special editions" cheapen the model (using up spare parts).
