MORE POWER!!!!!!!! Grrrrrr!

I've done all the mechanics, sorted the majority of the rust, and modified the body a small bit, next week i shall be stripping the interior and fitting fixed lights (when i buy them) the next project is to boost power, so the car is:

1987 944 2.5 Lux, i dont really want to change the engine, Ive changed the plugs, filters and the car has a Dansk Exhaust fitted,

What else can i do to get more power out of her? suggestions please!
 
It will get very expensive to chase power on these engines, and short of a rebuild, forced indction or nitrous I don't think you'll find anything more than a few percent gain.

I'd start by getting your engine on the dyno to find out if it's producing and then go from there. I would suggest that if you're after good lap times (and given you're stripping the car I'd think you're intending to track it) then you'll find much bigger improvements in suspension and brakes for example.

Don't be put off by this though, a decent weight reduction on these cars plus their excellent handling makes them a very nippy car on track anyway.

Inlet and exhaust manifold matching or replacement.
Revised camshafts.
MAP-based replacement ECU.

The cylinder head is superb, but the camshaft profiles are extremely steady. The Motronic DME is archaic and the whole inlet tract is restrictive.
 
I'm interested in this as well, I spoke to piper cams the other day and they said that they could do a re-grind for ~£100 to fast road. The 944's cam has no overlap on the intake valve which sucks for top end power. I'm convinced with the right modifications to the intake tract there are decent gains to be had here 15-20hp? I am building a MAF converter atm which should help with intake restriction and fuelling. Ive had it running and it gets rid of that hesitation when you blip the throttle from idle. The throttle body is also quite small. An in line air filter with a cold air feed might be a good idea too.

Surely all that would get you 30 hp. You are talking about £400. I think 180-190hp in a lux would be a great improvement and without the additional complexity of the 16v or turbo engines.

I would also reccoment bigger ARB's and some sports dampers. Ive got a 26.8mm bar on the front and 18mm on the rear with some koni adjustable dampers. The car handles significantly better than it did originally.
 
I think that retaining the DME would be a mistake. Any commonly available ECU able to run a MAP setup will be a great improvement; and itll be more than competitive on price too.
 
Aye, ive seen his camshafts before. Are they going to be significantly better than a re-ground cam from piper? I think he quoted me around 6-700 when I emailed the guy last time.
