More spoiler problems!

Hi all

I wondered if anyone could advise me on the following.

I have noticed that my cars rear spoiler is not fully returning to the closed position when not engaged. I have changed the semi-circular cog as some of the teeth were worn and I thought that a couple may be skipping but to no avail.

Any ideas on what else may be causing this?

Thanks

Darren.

Darren,

The spoiler mechanism is pretty simple in that it continues to move in either the open or close direction until something stops it. Apart from any mechanical obstruction the only thing intended to stop it are the limit microswitches - one for the open limit and one for the close limit. If either micro switch is badly positioned (or maladjusted) it's likely that the spoiler will stop short of it's taget position or, potentially, overrun.

If you remove the plastic cover the microswitches should be in plain sight and they can be adjusted quite easily.

If there are any engagement problems with the teeth on the quadrant gear it's entirely possible that the drive gear could lose drive so that's another area you need to check.

Hope that helps

Regards

Dave

My spoiler occasionally refuses to come down and remains up after coming to a halt . It can be driven down by the manual switch when this happens. Any ideas what causes it ?

John,

It's difficult to be sure, but I'm wondering if it might also be a microswitch issue. The spoiler controller probably needs to see the "up" switch operated in order to subsequently command a "down" operation. If your spoiler gets jammed in the "up" position and has not yet operated the "up" microswitch there's a chance it would not get issued the "down" instruction by the controller. The console switch is likely to get the controller to issue the "down" command regardless.

This is largely guesswork on my part you have to understand. I'm just voicing theories!!

Dave

Is the down switch supposed to be able to put the spoiler down when the car is in motion? (above the low speed limit, 6mph from memory).
Sometimes I want to lower mine, but I have to wait till I am crawling or stopped.

If the spoiler is activated by speed i.e. above 47mph then it will only retract when you get below 7mph
If you activate the spoiler i.e. raise it below 47mph, then providing you do not go on to exceed 47mph then you can lower and raise it at will with the console switch.
I think it is a built in safety feature to prevent you from lowering the spoiler at high speed and therefore destabilising the car.

thanks for that Dave ,sounds reasoble ! will report back once I've investigated , its an intermittent phenomenon and as I dont use the car for weeks at a time its probably the cobwebs setting in [:D]

All

a firend of mine has a '90 964 with a spoiler that will only raise when you press the button - anyone else had a similar problem / can suggest the likely offending part?

cheers

Ian

Hi i have not used my 91 964 since December now the spoiler refuses to operate at all any ideas thanks

My spoiler would simply drive itself into the up position and stay there until I used to switch to lower it.

I checked everything, even the signal from the speedo (1991 onward rely on one signal rather than two i.e. no additional signal from the gearbox which exists on older cars).

It transpired that it was a fault with the actual controller itself. I resided myself to fork out the 3.8 billion pounds Porsche wanted for a replacement (note a slight and I mean very slight exageration) and in a last ditched attempt to fix the ruddy thing I noticed that where the pcd uses tracks on the top and the bottom and to my horror noticed that the joints between the two faces was simply a blob of solder.

After resoldering (using pins this time) low and behold - the thing works perfectly now.

It could be as simple as that (but does not help Snake1's problem).

Cheers

Matthew
