Mot advisory

Evening all,
got the following advisory
Mot advisory - steering column universal joint has slight play lower
Can someone put that into layman terms please and describe what the remedy is? (& rough cost would be great!)
many thanks, craig

I think they can be rebuilt/may be available on exchange, Jon Mitchell can probably help.

You have the fixed part of the steering column which runs out through the bulkhead and the steering rack which is bolted to the cross member. Between the two is a shaft about 40cms long which has a universal joint at each end and transfers the torque from the steering wheel to the steering rack pinion. The lower universal joint is close to the exhaust so gets hot and wears out quicker than the upper one. The whole shaft is available as a replacement part from Porsche and is held on by 2 bolts (1 at each end). The upper bolt is accessible from the engine bay but you need to get under the car to get access to the lower bolt. Should take no more than 30 minutes to replace.

I had a similar advisory this year, last year & the year before-manual steering on the track day car.
decided to bite the bullet & bought a new OE shaft from ECP-cost £98 in VAT

I thought that I had replied to this thread earlier, clearly I messed up.....anyway IIRC what I basically said was this job takes longer than 30 mins, you may need to slacken off the rack to get enough play for removing the shaft off the spline at the lower end. Also if an early turbo there may be a few heat shields that need removing too. I have done this job twice over the years, in fact, it's probably getting close to needing doing again...more money..lol

Looking back at old mots last night, it's been an advisory for a few years! whats the risk with just leaving it for a few more years?!

Waylander rebuilds them - done his own and a couple of others. Seems it's a common problem with FE Porsches - my cab had a replacement fitted just before I bought her.
