MOT and Turbo Water Pump

I took the car for a MOT yesterday and it passed with no problems but I was surprised that they did not check the emmissions - I was told that they do not bother for pre 1992 cars unless it is making lots of smoke - has anyone else experienced this?
I was so pleased that it passed I gave it a bit of a thrashing on the way home - a sort of treat for the car [:)] - but when I stopped the turbo water pump ran for several miniutes[:(]. I thought this pump only ran for about 30 seconds - have I got a problem or is this normal for a very hot engine - any advice anybody?

The pump should run for two reasons. The first is for 20 seconds after switching off, the second is whenever the temperature is above a certain level. I think Tony rigged up an LED once to prove that it sometimes switches on whilst driving along.

If your car was very, very hot, that could explain it, or maybe the temp sensor has gone a bit flakey [&:]. I would test it by switching off straightaway after starting first thing in the morning and seeing if it switches off after 20 secs ok.

Thanks Paul - I just tried it (engine cold) and the pump ran for 28 sec and stopped - so I will just drive it and see what happens.
