MOT, FACT OR FICTION?

Just had my reminder and it says I can still put my car in up to one month early. If it passes the certificate will run one year from the expiry date.

What if it fails?

I can drive it home legally but.......

Can I still use my car until the expiry date?

I have "googled" this and get conflicting answers!

All comments welcome but I am looking for a professional opinion.

Crown court judge will qualify[:D]

You can drive your car legally provided it has a valid MOT. Just because it has failed a recent test (or may do) doesn't mean the current MOT is no longer valid.

Personally I like to keep my car MOT worthy at all times, there is a difference in this case between being legal & being safe, I'll fix a problem as soon as possible after spotting it rather than waiting for an MOT tester to point it out.

Note that despite having a current MOT if you are stopped by the police & they deem the car unroadworthy (eg bald tyre, blowing exhaust, faulty handbrake) they can insist that you fix it or take it off the road.

Sorry I'm not a Judge, just owned a lot of rubbish cars [;)]

Ask yourself this question
"Would you allow your wife and kids to ride in this car?"
That should give you the answer to you continuing to use the car.

Sorry, I'm not a judge but I have seen Crown Court on the telly.[:)]

Cheers,

Thanks, just a hypothetical question as I don't expect to fail.

I once used my failed car to get a replacement bulb that must have blown on the way to the test centre!!! Is this now illegal?

It has been suggested that a failure now overrides a current test certificate!

Not much of an incentive to put it in early.

You can use the car with its old mot..however I would do this only if it failed on something not too serious in which case you would probably fix it anyway[8|]

Only if she was on her own Fred. Or perhaps with the kids !

Just joking. I'll upgrade the insurance policy first.[;)]

Riverside covered both angles...[8|]

Yes, if you fail you still have a month to run before taking the car off the road.

No, if you fail then the car is un-roadworthy and you are perfectly aware of the fact. Therefore, if you were to drive it then you are intentionally committing an offense.

I've always gone for the 13-month mot, now I'm thinking of leaving it to the last minute......

Trevor,
I suppose it all comes down to how much she is insured for, and a good Porsche is probably harder to find than a replacement cook![:D]
