MOT Fail....any advice?

Firstly....respect to the Mrs for taking the Porsche for MOT whilst away at sea...and generally looking after her well.......

2 Failure Points reported...

001 Offside front steering rack gaiter split

Easy job? DIY?

002 Offside outer rear tie/rod excessive play in ball joint

Not actually sure what this is ? (forgive my lack of knowledge) Easy Job? DIY? a chance to upgrade etc etc

I watched my indie do this repair for me on my car. Never have so many "expletives deleted" have I heard such cussing!
Simple job??
Refitting the rubber seals over the ends of the steering rack (buried quite deeply within the fabricated chassis components) was a grade 1 PIA. At least one hour a side to do. Then, despite carefully measuring and marking the old TREs, when I took the car to have the geometry reset it was miles out.
Only DIY if you have full garage lift, strong thumbs, supply of swages and strong spoons and of course the eequipment to reset your geo!!
 
look on the bright side at least it wasn't your steering rack and only the outer tie joint.
At the risk of having stuff thrown at me I would venture to suggest that the tie rod joint has gone due to the car being run up and down curbs and in and out of sunken drain covers/pot holes etc in the gutter.
My Ex was forever running up and down curbs to get round cars etc . I won't let her drive my latest S2 . I prefer to graze the rims along all the kerbs all by myself [8|][:D]
 
Must admit car prob safer in wifes hand................drives it like shes towing a caravan!!!

However, anbody got any tips on the the steering gaiter....some say easy to change...some say not.....

No guidance in the Adrain Streather Book or p.car forum......anywhere else to look ?

well I have been tempted in the past to glue/weld the rip with a decent rubber cement .No reason why a good weld shouldn't outlast the gaitor's lifetime. We vulcanise tyres why not rubber gaitors. ?
Never removed one from your model but the job is straightforward enough on most cars with better access. You need to check with Clarkes garage or Parragon or get a handbook if you intend to do these sort of DIY jobs without any experience.
Its basically a rubber concertina hose with a jubilee clip at both ends . You undo the clips then either unscrew the track rod end from the steering rack or the rack end and slip the gaitor off and a new one on. If you are replacing the rod end at the same time buy or hire a splitter (or better still a puller) to remove the rod ball joint then loosen the locknut and unscrew the rod end from the rack then swop your gaitor then put it all back and get your tracking reset pronto
 
I've done the steering rack gaiters twice on my 993. The first set of gaiters I obtained from my OPC thinking they'd be the right quality, when the arrived they looked like they had been lying around forever but I dutifully fitted them. Lasted about two months. Second set from Europarts were slightly different in shape and came with tie wraps to seal the ends (the original has nothing) and they've been good. There's a technique to it, the second set took me half an hour for both. I've forgotten how I did it, will look underneath and get back to you if you're srill interested.

Would be very interested in any tips looks like could be pain to "just" slip on.....TVM

Ordered mine from OPC (£6.98) all in....however..as you stated no jubilee clips or tie wraps on....

Will have a good look at the ones I pick up from OPC before I accept them.....

Can you believe this.....Went to OPC Reading to collect Steering Gaiter...£6.89...parts guy come out with said part......£6.89.....I only have a £20 or a £5 on me..........bloke takes the the £5 and calls it quits....!!!!

Now that is service!!!!!
 
Okay,

here's how to replace the steering rack gaiters. Jack the front of the car up, both sides so the whole front end is off the ground. Undo the plastic nuts holding the front undertray on and the two bolts (be careful with these as they can shear) and remove the tray. Turn the steering to fully extend one side of the rack. If not replacing the track rod ends, cut off the old gaiter. This will expose the hex head of the track rod inner end that you need to undo. Place a Spanner on the steering rack end which has flats for this purpose (17mm from memory), and a spanner on the hex on the track rod and undo, counter holding the spanner on the steering rack. Once undone, you'll find a big washer which needs to go back as it came off.

You'll find a groove in the track rod (see picture below) which you should tape over with insulating tape. A few winds should do. Push on your new gaiter all the way over and reverse the above steps reattaching the rod to the rack. then slide the gaiter back over the tape until it engages the groove on the rack, remove tape from the rod and engage the gaiter on that side too. Repeat for the other gaiter.

Sounds complicated, but it's not and it will make much more sense when your down there. the trick lies in taping over the groove and sliding the gaiter on which makes it easy to manipulate into place after it's bolted on.

You will not need to redo the geo as you've not undone the ball joint at the damper end or adjusted and settings. The rod should be tightened to 52lbft.

The picture below (the top arm) clearly shows the groove you need to tape up, push on the gaiter all the way to the end.

Hope it makes sense, I'm not great at write ups but happy to answer any questions.

Advantage is, has no rubber in it so much more positive feel.
 
Many thanks for the advice went like a dream upto getting the gaiter over the inboard (larger flange).....any tips on getting this end on !!!

I have nearly dislocated my fingers trying to get the $%^*ard on!!!! and its still not on...its a mighty tight fit!!!

any top tips.......

I bought a set like that to get the GT2 inners; should be fitting them before too much longer.

try turning the steering wheel to compress the gaiter, in this position slide a screwdriver under it an pull it on being careful not to tear it.

phelix, where did you get them? let us know how you get on with them and if they do improve the front end.

Whooo...job done...thanks for all the advice...saved myself a couple of hundred quid on that one......took some phots etc so if anyone else needs help can post them...
