MOT - Fail

Well the old girl failed today [:(] nothing to serious handbrake efficiency, which I did think would happen so new handbrake shoes ordered gong to get the garage to do them for me, well I am on holiday this week!

Advisory on noisy offside rear wheel bearing, and small amount of play on nearside front bearing, so I am having all 4 changed.

Not bad though, only 3 fails in 12 and all for minor items

Not a bad result.

The handbrake shoes don't really wear, so check the cable first. Mine was an advisory on the MOT, but is currently in two pieces for easy inspection.... [&o]

They seldom wear out, but the can break. An application of the handbrake when moving can clean them up.

I saw mine when we dropped the axle, they are worn out !
But 26 years old to be expected, the next set probably won't wear out [:D]

If interested I have a new set of Pagid handbrake shoes (unopened box), bought from Berlyn years ago as a duplicate order - yours for £35.00 inc. p+p. They fit various Porsche models.

Agree they should last life of car, but considering 20+ years now it is likely the brake cable has stretched and protective casing have perished or split. So I ended up replacing cable and shoes after advisories two years running.

I changed the shoes on my Lux as part of a technical demonstration. At 120K miles they had no appreciable wear, but the springs were shot. They were £120 per set.

Thanks Tony for the offer, already ordered them yesterday morning though.

Put them in the parts for sale section, someone might snap them up

You're not doing enough handbrake turns. Mine were worn and needed replacing a couple of years back.

Regarding your wheel bearing I would check them first (and adjust if necessary) before getting too hasty.

Taper wheel bearings will naturally have a very minor amount of play about that. Whilst the advisory could be justified if this is not the case, the advisory could be a little hasty if:

a) the tester was very picky!
b) the tester is unfamiliar with taper wheel bearings (amongst the new testers this is certainly the case (read on). Sealed bearings in comparison will have zero play due to a differing design.

On a mate's Triumph Dolomite I was given the task of recommisioning for the MOT it failed on a loose wheel bearing. Further inspection showed that even with a dial gauge (most will check the wheel bearing with feeler gauges on that kind of car as per the manual (less accurate method)) it was still within spec of the BL manuals and Haynes (less than maximum specified value). When I tightened the bearings on my Porsche thinking that they may fail my tester basically said do not always try to get rid of all of the play due to their design.

Hi Chas,

Don't be too hasty - oops to late [:D]

The work was commissioned at my garage within 20 mins of the fail certificate, I don't hang about and wait like you Turbo boys! [:D][:D]

I have had a little, judder/wobble/vibration from the front and a grating/grinding noise from the rear for a while so I am happy with the diagnoses, and the same tester has done my car for all but 3 of the 12 MOT's and is a good guy.

When something needs doing on my car, it gets replaced, not a lot left of the original 27 year old parts now, I work on the theory that as they have got this far, then they won't need replacing again - hopefully!

That's fair enough :).

I was wondering whether an inexperienced (well, to the older stuff) taster had unfairly been a little harsh as a result of unfamiliarity.
