MOT Failure Handbrake

HI all. She failed the MOT on the handbrake today. Only 8% and only need 16% to pass, I have removed the discs and everything seems to be moving ok. It feels like the cable as the action is not smooth but all the cables appear free and working. The brakes were releasing at the MOT centre and the Guys thought it may be cables because of this. Having dismantled one side and then looking at the cables route (up behind the beam - nightmare) I was going to just adjust and put back and hope for the best. Any suggestions would be welcome. Gutted that its all it failed on but the current MOT doesn't run out until 21st April so at least 3 more weeks to enjoy!!
Thanks

I had the cables replaced a few years ago, it was a good couple of hours labour plus parts IIRC. Not a cheap job, but if it's the only MOT failure on a 20-year-old car then not the end of the world!

At least you know that a new cable will last you another 20 years. [:)]

Replacing the cables is possible, although a bit snug in places... If they move freely you're probably best off looking at the mechanisms.

I'd get both discs off and clean everything up, then adjust as per Clark's instructions here:

If this doesn't work and the shoes are good then it's the cables. There are two cables, long and short: on mine the short had rusted solid and I ended up having to cut it off and then spend a few happy hours reaching up behind the rear beam to get the new one on.

Thanks for that. Have sorted one side already and the short cable is fine. The long cable is a bit grunty! It may be snagging. Am waiting for OPC to ring back as three long cables for my chassis number on their system. Was surprised at the cost £35 + VAT for original. Europarts wants 40 +. Will always ring OPC first I think as again they have been the cheapest and the parts should be right.
I know I should'nt have been narked about only failing on that but it only did 2000 miles since the last MOT and it the pain of the re-test and 10 day window.
Not a easy job especially trying to replace the springs etc on the shoes. Thanks again for the advice [:)][:)]
