Right then people. Car has failed on what the mechanic called not leaking shock absorbers but p***ing shocks!! I would like to know if anyone has any particular brands I should look at in the low to mid price range and also is this a job I could take on myself??
Also my windscreen washer has stopped working, yes it has water in the tank, any ideas what I need to look at for this??

Many thanks
Simon.

You don't say, so I'm going to presume you are talking about the front shock absorbers and not the rears too.

Call Bert at www.berlyn-services.co.uk I believe he stocks standard, bilstein and Koni inserts for the earlier shocks. I believe they will be well under £100 each and to really transform the car change the rear ones at the same time. Checkout the usual suspects for price comparisons:

www.eurocarparts.co.uk (see the post for 10% discount at Leeds)

You can change these easily yourself (www.clarks-garage.com) but you will need a spring compressor to avoid taking your head off. A respected local garage would only take a few hours labour and if they leave the bottom of the shock connected you won't need a suspension re-alignment.

The washer bottle pump is easily pulled out of the tank and replaced for not much money. Pop up the lights and you will see a cylindrical pump sitting in the lower part of teh washer bottle. I have a problem with the connector on mine which a quick wiggle cures for a few months [&:]

I've had the following cause this over the years:

- Failed pump, water ingress had rusted out the internals. I paid over the odds for a new one from OPC, I think there's a cheaper VW one that fits.

- Stuck non-return valves in the pipes to the nozzles on the bonnet. Replaced with new ones, including the metal clips that hold the pipes to them.

- Plastic gauze on the end of the pickup tube in the tank became clogged with gunk (mixing different screenwash can cause this). Cleaned it up, emptied and refilled tank.

HTH,

Jim.

Another shock insert brand is Boge, about £120 the front pair including fitting and VAT.
