MOT & Front fogs

Thought my MOT ran out next month, it actually runs out on Tuesday!![]

I know one of my front fog lights isn't working right now, is that a failure point? ...and whilst I think of it, rear window demister is not working, they don't check that as well do they (daft question I guess?)

Cheers
Andy

Main reason I ask is when I bought the car I'm sure last owner said that the front fog failed just BEFORE his last MOT (and I've just forgotten about looking at it!)

I've heard befoe only rears are covered, and looking here - http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/doitonline/bl/mottestingmanualsandguides/mottestingmanualsandguides.htm I might be correct. It mentions rear fogs, also lists front lamps and says you must have two front position lamps, but any additional lamps are not included in the inspection. I guess I can just ask the MOT station first and find out!

Cheers
Andy

I'm not sure a car has to have front fog's so you could tape them up (Red leccy tape or similar) and then you don't have them - might be an option, I think you'll be fine as long as your rears work because at the end of the day their the really important ones, fronts tend to be options on higher spec'd cars.

I could be wrong though, I hope all goes well for you

Never in all my driving years which is before the MOT was invented have I had my fog lights checked or is it just me[8|]

I thought if its fitted it must work but reading this it seems you are right.

Rear fog lamps are compulsary, but the front fogs are neither required nor tested. "If it fitted it has to work" is a pub, and now internet, myth.

Rear fog lights!!!!! Don't get me started on that one. The devils work. Why oh why do people (loose) not turn them off when another car is following them do they think they are going to be attacked up the ass by a Euro fighter at sea level!!!!

If I need them I turn them on, but as soon as a car is close enough to see me, I turn them off. Ive never seen another driver do this though...

Mmm... well I do get wound up by people driving around on clear days with their rear fogs on BUT if you're close enough behind me to be bothered by my rear fogs when it is foggy enough for me to have them on then you're too close.

Sorry Glenn must disagree on that, if you can see headlights behind you you shouldn't't have your rears on. They will distract from seeing brake lights.

Andy if you do want to tape the front dogs over, don't use RED tape, you shouldn't'show red lights to the front and even if only one is on, it will still glow through.
Black would be my choice.

Front fogs working are not a MOT requirement....at the moment....

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).'

I wish they would default to off when the main lights are turned off; I think that is a requirement in contemporary cars......

That is the problem. There seems to be a significant amount of drivers who are not able to notice a moving object in a scenery unless it's "really bright". Unsurprisingly, it gets worse in heavy fog.

On my MOT the tester could not get the rear fogs working until I explained that the fronts had to be on at the same time as per the handbook, however he was not bothered about whether the fronts worked or not only the rears. So maybe they are not interested in the fronts although my view has always been that if there is a light regardless of function it should work so not sure.

Yes and it makes it virtually impossible to see up the road in front of the car in front with fogs burning out your retinas.
