MOT Garage Recommendation - West Midlands Area?

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a garage to get my 993 MOT'd around the Solihull/West Midlands area? Its my first year of ownership and need some advice!

Or is it recommended to go to an official Porsche Service Centre for MOTs?

Thanks,
Paul.

I've had 993 for nearly 10 years and have always had any work done at PCT on the A45 towards Coventry from NEC.

Its an independant Porsche centr formed by 3 partners who all worked for Porsche in Birmingham.

They are well established and are very reasonable and will give good advice. Ask for Nick.

Paul,

Do you have a garage you usually use for MOTs on other cars and that you trust? If so I would just take it there and then use your Porsche (independent) specialist for any remedial work required. There's nothing unusual about these cars from an MOT perspective.

My usual approach is to have my indy service the car and take it to an MOT station for me, but that's more for convenience than anything. On the odd occasion when I've taken it myself I haven't had a problem (although I've noticed they do sometimes linger over the car!).

Like a lot of 993 owners I avoid the Porsche main dealers as they have very limited exposure to 993s now. The independents are usually much more au fait with them and considerably cheaper.

Cheers/John

Hi Paul,

I live in Solihull. Before Solihull OPC moved from Four Ashes, Dorridge to Highlands Road, Shirley, they had no in house MOT facility. They used Cross Roads Service Station in Cheswick Green. I have used this garage for many years for various Cars including 2 993's. It is run by Father and 2 sons plus a few other mechanics. It is very clean and tidy, they are friendly and I have built up a good relationship with them.

I would echo John Boult's reply, you need a good MOT station that you can trust. I would also add that PCT and Shirleys in Meriden are both good independent Porsche people, however, Les the Service Manager at Solihull OPC knows 993's and they have a couple of mechanics that served their time on 993's.

Good luck.

Mark

Hi Paul...hope you are enjoying the 993

Did you see the topic that in the 3.2 section 'Useful Contacts'
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=809524&mpage=1&key=&#809524

Mike is Porsche trained and now runs Air Cooled Engineering specialising in VWs and Porsche. Mike has been around Porsche all his life and is a total enthusiast as well. There is an MOT station right next door to ACE so he will get the car MOT'd and can carry out any work. Mike lives in Solihull so will collect and deliver if that helps

Cheers

Fantastic advice everyone many thanks. I've decided to take it to Porsche Solihull for the MOT, after speaking with Les and Matt there they are clearly passionate about 993s and have offered to let me watch the MOT take place/look at the underside etc whilst on the ramp.

If it needs any work, then I'll go to one of the independents you've advised.

Thanks Forum! I'll let you know how it went...

Just to let you know, Porsche Solihull were superb. Knowledgable and friendly and I would recommend to anyone.

Passed with flying colours by the way, which was nice...

Hi Paul,

Please to read that Porsche Solihull did your MOT. Les is a great guy. I don't have any experience of other Official Porsche Centres but have always found Solihull knowledgeable about 993's, helpful and willing to discuss labour costs.

Best regards,

Mark
