MOT Statistics

If this is a repost I apologise as I haven't been able to follow the forum as much as normal recently, but I was emailed the following that I thought would be of interest

BBC MOT news story

Excel file of statistics

The latter is the interesting bit, showing number of passes and fails as well as the reasons. Whilst I think we can ignore the fails (my garage puts my car in for an mot before a service so I think it's fair there will be a lot that get a pass later on the same day) it is useful to see how many cars are being used currently and it shows the most popular years. It is also interesting and promising to see that not that many are failing due to bodywork. I do however warn you that this is quite an addictive document and is a great way to waste time (did you know there are at least 73 F40's in the UK...).

I nearly replied to the 996 thread. It's no surprise that many cars, in fact the majority, fail on simple things like light bulbs.

Personally, I pay the guys who service the car to service it. They check things like light bulbs before the car goes in for a test, then they work with the testers if there's anything borderline.

Reading the media response to this story it seems to be saying that, at first MOT (which will be at a dealer), French cars are less reliable than Japanese cars (which have a decent warranty).

Go figure....[&:]

Sorry, I now realise this was old news and was posted on Titanic a few days ago too. Doh!

I'll soon be marvelling at the electric light bulb and the wind up gramophone at this rate.

The exel document doesn't contain the full list. The BBC chap generated the exel document from tbe original PDF and didn't include everything.

Interesting reading - 4062 944 passes and 2445 fails (and several cars supposedly registered in 1993 and 1995 - you have to wonder how many typos are included in the figures)

4062 944 passes and 2445 fails

So, could this answer a long-running question? Do we assume that there are just over 6500 944s still running in the UK?

I suppose a few are mothballed and not MOT'd, and some are running around without any MOT, but it's nice to have a ball-park figure.

The big question, of course, is why are there only about 1000 of us on this forum? What are all the other 5500 doing all day? [&:]

Mmmm I do wonder about the accuracy. According to the list there were no Caterham 21s MOTed in 2004 but I know mine had an MOT!

ETA actually column C is year of first use so that may be registration year not MOT test year.

The way I interpret those figures is that it's most likely there's just over 4000 944's out and about (ignoring restoration projects etc), I think it's fair to assume that many of the cars that failed were repaired and put straight back through the test (probably under a free retest). My 944S would be a good example, it was booked for a service and MOT with my garage, it went straight to the MOT centre (we knew the ball joint was worn) and failed but was fixed and retested later on the same day, so in this instance I suspect I would have added a fail and a pass on the same day [&:] My white 944 added a couple of fails due to the problems I had with headlights, so I've been doing my bit to raise the fail statistics [:D]

Ahh, I didn't interpret it that way. I assumed it was purely the results of the first test, giving an idea of the relative reliability between cars, rather than you counting as a "pass" no matter how many times it took to get there! [8|]
