MOT

Hi Ian, I had the same call two years ago, and it's a horrible feeling. The good news is that there's no reaosn it should be terminal: if it wasn't even an advisory last year it's unlikely to be a completely rotten car! You might need to find a local guy who isn't going to see "Porsche" and assume you'll open your wallet. I used a small classic car restorer for mine, to redo what the "recommended" repairer had bodged up for the MOT. [] It all depends how far you want to go, but there isn't a car out there that isn't repairable/restorable. If it's mechanically good, then some money thrown at the bodywork is better than taking a risk on another car IMO. Good luck!

well yesterday was a bad day. MOT time and I dropped the car off at Ninex. I had the dreaded phone call a couple of hours later reporting some issues that were potentially expensive to fix. The last couple of years there had been no major problems so I was a bit surprised.

Upshot is there's rust in the right hand sill, which I knew about. It has been looking a bit rough lately. Apparently there's a fair bit of filler in there where the previous owner had a bodged repair done. Unfortunately that's not the extent of it. The major problem is that it's rusty near where the rear suspension is mounted. They've got it up on a ramp and they're getting an estimate from the body shop they use. They don't think it's going to be cheap and it may be terminal. They're calling this am to let me know. Not looking forward to this either way.

I'm surprisingly upset by this and am preparing for the worst. Trying to look on the bright side - if i'm buying another Porsche I suppose rainy grey winter days are better for discussing price.

+1 I've had this as well, you really need someone who either knows these cars or is used to doing these sort of repairs. Prices vary massively so shop around. Where abouts are you? Although it may not be terminal you do need to way up the pros and cons if say £2k will get the car spot on and a few years more use out it, great, if not and there is a list of work it might be worth buying one someone else has already spent the money on! Whats the engine like?

Hi Ian Sorry to hear this....my S2 had a bodged repair on the n/s sill when I bought it (only discovered when it started bubbling through later on). FWIW I took it to Specialised Paintwork at Calcot (behind Porsche GB)...they did the sill and the bottoms of both front wings, cut out all rusty metal and welded in new steel sheet. A good repair, still OK several years on. At the time Carl said they were doing 3 or 4 944s a month, so they know what they're doing.

I say repair it... it's not the big drama that some people would have you believe. The outer sill can be in a very bad state before it spreads deep into the structure of the car (take a look at my thread!). I paid £600 to have my local garage (bear in mind this was in London) do a good repair to the nearside and am now replacing the entire offside sill myself.

Hi Ian The only way to assess is to have a body shop open the area up and see what the damage is.The area at the rear of the sills is now a common problem and if a bodyshop doesn't know the structure of a 944 they may think it is terminal. It is common that from underneath and looking at the suspension mount you see the area behind the circular opening of the mount as badly rusted or holed. This is infact the inner panel and not the mount itself. My S2 is currently having that area repaired , on both sides while it is in the N/S wwould be a mot fail and the o/s not as bad.The good news for me is the inner sills are perfect and when repaired will be as good as new.The car had a very expensive repair done by a previous owner but all they had done was use filler ! absolute bodge job and rip off.It was 8mm thick in places. I will post a set of pics from start to finish so the problems can be seen for those interested. Where are you based , the garage I am using are superb and work on a range of classic cars all the time. Hope it works out for you. Nick

I'll be stopping by the shop to have a look and discuss. They've got it opened up to have a look and have suggested that I should see it before making a decision. These guys know their transaxle Porsches - they look after a fair number of them and race them. I've been taking the car there for a couple of years now and do trust them.

I've just been out to Maidenhead to have a look and discuss with the shop. Don't think it's as bad as I'd initially thought. They're estimating 4-5 hours and I'm now leaning towards getting it sorted..

Hi nick, who are you using? I'd like someone to have a look at mine in the near future, and you'll remember I'm not far from you. Regards Craig

Hi Craig , I am using Powells of Ripon , they specialise in restoration and are excellent , look at their website and also YCSC site which is their specialist sales business. They know the 944 and Dan Powell who runs the classic car sales business has one he uses every day. They have been taking photos of the work on mine as it progresses , some of which I will post for interest. I know the guys as I do some work for them , if you decide to take it to them for an assessment let me know and we can meet up. Nick

Cheers nick, really helpful thanks, I'll probably take you up on that as two heads better than one, especially where my heads concerned.

Just been looking at my mot certificate from last month and what a coincidence......"advisory item - rear (slight corrosion started around axle mountings) suspension component prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (2.4.A.3)" So looks like something I'll have to address sooner rather than later. To be honest I've no idea what this all means.

FAO nick, how did you get on? Out of interest do you know of Chris Gregory at auto refinishing in knaresbrough? Bit closer for me than Ripon, that's all Cheers mate

Chris Gregory has a great reputation and come well recommended. I would certainly go and talk to him and would be happy to let him at my car. RPM at Knaresborough use him because of the quality of his finish. I have a feeling he doesn't do complete restoration but does some body work, you would have to check with him. I also understand he is quite reasonable price wise too.
