MOT.

I rang the Porsche Centre Reading recently to book my Boxster S in for an MOT. They said that they don't actually do the test, but take the car to a local garage. I found this quite surprising, especially for the Reading centre. More so because the last time I took my car there for a service, I enquired about the reason for a glass sided work bay visible from the seated area. I was told that it was for showing customers any MOT faults with their cars.

2 sides to the story.

Firstly, I have taken cars to main dealers before for MOTs and that they have told me that they take the car to elsewhere to get it done. Wasn't a problem as it didn't cost any more.

Secondly, I was sitting in OPC Reading this morning watching a Forest Green Boxster be put through some tests. The light tests and so on looked suspiciously like an MOT being done.

MOT test currently costs £42.10 according to DTp website, most of which is paid over to the government I assume. Compare that to OPC labour rates at the moment and see how little profit there would be for the dealer having a technician tied up for half-an-hour doing a test. Far more cost effective (for the OPC and the customer) for the test to be subbed out to a local testing station.

The OPC may well do a pre-MOT inspection, but that will be at their published labour rates I guess.

Chapelgate in Bournemouth always used a garage down the road, as detailed on the MOT certificate.
Always charged the full £40 which annoyed me somewhat as I could get it done at the local Nissan dealer for £20.
