MotorTune (Shotts)

Dear All,

Just had a major service for my '99 Boxster and replacement of the front link rods from Peter at MotorTune. Additionally, I asked him to investigate a rattle from the rear nearside suspension and a soft "clunk" from the front callipers on low speed braking.

This was by far the best experience I have had from any garage. The service was comprehensive, the repairs sensibly priced and the diagnostic work second to none.

He also carried out a comprehensive trouble shoot on the rattle. This was not easy to diagnose and was found to be a "nearside rear radius arm front bush". Sweet lord, what the hell is that??!! I hear you cry.

The cost to me for this diagnostic work? The square of hee haw! Naturally the car is booked back in for the repair once the part is brought in.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend them for any Porsche outwith warranty. The service log was also stamped.

PS : The soft "clunk" from the front brakes was from ill-fitting pads (TEXTARs, supplied by Design911). He also sorted that out!

cheers,

Much happier Iain.

Iain,

After moving up from England, I despaired at finding someone decent and had some bad experiences along the way. Would totally agree that Motortune is superb, actually the car is going in on Thursday for a few minor things.

Trouble is that Peter is getting so busy now it means a longer wait, so will have to plan better in the future[:D]

I am another happy customer of Peters, and he has gathered a lot of praise on various Porsche related forums of late, all of it well deserved.

I had my 964 MOT'd there yesterday, and asked him to check out an annoying brake shudder I've had for some time. Turns out that one of the new disks he fitted recently is warped, so he is going to replace it free gratis next week. No arguments, no mucking about, it will just get replaced. Are you listening certain other establishments?

They also make a decent cup of tea while you wait.

Great place.

And bizarrely I'm popping in on Friday getting my fronts replaced on the S2 for exactly the same reason (one of the fronts "kicking" as Peter put it). Not Zimmermanns from Eurocarparts on your 964 too are they?

If you do a search you'll find little other than high praise for Peter / Motortune. [:)]

They must like you William ~ I've only had coffee once (the day I cahtted with you actually) and no biscuits. [:(]

I shall highlight this when I am in on Friday and let you know... [;)]

Yes, exactly so. I would have preferred Porsche disks, but Peter had ordered them anyway. Indeed if I have one quibble with Peter it is that he tends to use pattern parts by default, presumably as that's what the majority of his customers want. In future I will make the point that I am happy to pay a bit more for Porsche spares (well disks anyway!)

another one who travels 90 miles to get Peter to look at his Car , Superb !!

It's not the distance that troubles me ... it's the hassle of trying to get through the roads around the Forth road bridge at morning rush hour that gives me the vapours. 40 mins to get over the bridge and as far as Newbridge yesterday [] ... worse than London. How anyone puts up with this on a daily commuting basis is beyond me.

Interesting, as Peter called ECP whilst I was there and stated that this was the first issue he'd ever experienced with Zimmermans. I've no reason to doubt this is true, so a bizarre coincidence indeed. [&:] My discs are 8 months / 5K miles old, but again no-question or quibble about replacement (once he'd checked that I hadn't cooked them ~ which I'd expected and consider perfectly fair).

Peter has only really carried out one "reasonably big" job on my car ~ calliper refurb / new discs&pads. I asked what he was putting on in advance, and was ultimately happy to go with his judgement (leaning on his considerable experience). No question he'd be happy to source genuine parts from the OPC if requested.

One thing to remember is that a lot of OEM parts are just rebadged by the car maker as they do not make them themselves.

I have to add comment on the Zimmermans.

Fitted a new pair last year with the pads, back and front to the Supersport.

Warped them within the first 150 mile drive over the highlands, had not let them bed in sufficiently I was told.

Changed, FOC by Specialist Cars of Malton, no hassle.

Interesting, as I suspect that the disks, or at least one of them, was possibly warped from the outset, as I have had this shudder ever since the disks were changed, it has just taken me a while to get around to getting it fixed.

I'm hard pressed to see what sort of bedding in would prevent a disk from warping.

My thoughts exaclty. The first question he asked me was, is there a blue shine over the disks.

As I said, yes, that was his response.

Fitted another front pair along with Padgid Black pads. Since they were the Turbo brakes, I still have yet to find a better pair of stoppers on a car.

God, I really miss it.. .. ..

[:(]

Tuck them up at night with a cup of hot choc in the CD player ?

Approx 300 miles of more sedate driving I was told.

Well I'm back with two new front discs and the brakes now feel lovely (like they should of course) [:)]

I'm similarly convinced I had this problem from new ~ I had no judder until recently, but my brakes gave inconsistant retartadation (not smoothe to a stop - as if it was a disc thickness inconsistancy as opposed to a traditional warping) from the day peter did them. I'd only had the car a couple of weeks before he did this, so didn't immediately twig.

To his credit, Peter told me about a similar problem with Zimmermans this week on another owners car before I got the chance to say that I'd read about one. That's you John that is. [;)]

Interesting, your analysis of the problem is EXACTLY the same as mine. Perhaps a batch of faulty disks? []

Anyway, looking forward to getting mine fettled next week. [:D]
