Move from 991.1 C2 to 991.2 C2...?

Hi. Am seeking advice, comments, thoughts and opinions please [:)]

Am seriously considering trading in my 991.1 C2 (62 plate 2013 on 26k miles) for a brand new 991.2 C2.

Going to my local Porsche Centre tomorrow for a test drive in their new 991.2 demo.

Considering going for a fairly modest spec (£82k) to include a manual gearbox and a Miami Blue paint job! [8D]

I'm not especially looking for more power or speed. I actually like a lot of the changes that the Gen II brings and I even think that the 991.2 may suit my style more than the Gen I.

Although this would be my third Porsche in a short space of time, this would most certainly be a long term keeper (3-5 years or more). The pinnacle of my aspiration is to spec my very own 911 from new!

Looking forward to all constructive and honest comments!

Cheers,

Simon

You'll love the 991.2! Going for the Miami Blue option is a clever move as you don't see many around and is a real showstopper. I'd probably keep to a decent sports seat option, GT steering wheel and maybe Bose sound system. The dealer will try and persuade you there are lots of must have options, but it's your money, so keeping it simple is your prerogative. (If the demo is fitted with sports exhaust that might cost you some cash[8D])

Cheers, Peter! Yep, I'm going to be strict on my budget/spec, and see if I can get them to move at all on the 'net cost to change'. I'll update on here in due course.

Cheers,

Simon

it will be interesting to know what the lead time is for a C2, I have been given 6months for a CS4, just in time before the road tax increases kick in.!!

Hi. My Porsche Centre have a Nov build slot for Dec delivery, so could be mine inside 3 months! Am part way through a day long test drive of their new C2 demo. It had 40 miles on it this morning and I've trebled that already! :ROFLMAO:

Another local Porsche Centre quoted delivery some time in the new year, but they were a bit vague. Lots of folks awaiting the new GTS!

Am taking the demo back this afternoon to talk numbers... Wish me luck!

Simon,
I'm interested to hear what you thought of the gen 2 and what the good and bad points (if any) that you found compared to your gen 1?

Peter,
as you've been living with your C2S for a little while now, what has improved in your opinion, has it lost the lovely noise the Gen 1 with PSE used to make and what about the engine response?

Hi Russell.

I really enjoyed the test drive and gather that I was lucky to get it for pretty much the whole day. It was a non-metallic white C2 with PDK, PSE, Sport Chrono, Bose, sport seats, heated seats, heated multi-function steering wheel, 20" RS Spyder wheels and a pano roof (at least they were the main options that I noticed).

I like the upgraded PCM, which I had had previously on my Macan. And I like that PASM is now standard, which I don't have currently. It felt "tighter" to me to drive, but maybe that's because it's brand new, rather than having done 26k miles. The PASM improved both the ride and handling for me, compared to my non-PASM 991.1 C2.

The 991.2 has 20 bhp more than my car and to me, it felt faster, being more responsive with a better pick up. I guess that's the greater low down torque. Weirdly, it seemed to have less 'lag' than my current naturally aspirated car!? Go figure!? I tried not to use the PSE or Sport Chrono too much, as I won't have them on my new car. The only downside for me was the sound! The turbo engine to me, even with PSE turned on, does not sound as good as the N/A 991.1. I think that I can live with that loss of sound/character, taking account of the other benefits, to me, of the new 991.2 including the ability to spec it to my own requirements! But a part of me will miss the more 'mechanical' sound of the 991.1 along with the burbles and pops etc!

Hi Russell (part 2)

Yes, lived with the C2S for a few weeks now, and it's a bit of a slow burn for me. The obvious improvements are the new pcm with updated satnav (though I haven't bothered signing up for Apple Car Play), the mf steering wheel is a big plus for me, particularly with the new GT steering wheel (although it is very easy to trigger the heater by mistake).

The main concerns that I had centred round the engine, but having lived with it for a while it is a meaty beast and in real world driving is everything you would need. The sports exhaust is similar to the old one, with lots of pops and bangs, but of course the NA zing, particularly from 5k RPM plus, is missing, it just rums relentlessly round to the red line in a totally linear fashion.

My choice this time around was to add PDCC (thanks to the advice on this very forum), and rear wheel steering. It is hard to justify financially, and I think unless testing it back to back with one without, would be hard to say it is dramatically different. But the turn in is very clean, particularly under braking on sharp corners, and gives a lot of confidence. As usual, powering out is incredible, and always feels as though the back end is digging in and launching you away, particularly with the torque from the new engine.

Are you thinking of trading up too?

Hello Simon, I've had my Gen 2 for three months and absolutely love it. I was concerned about how I'd feel about the lack of naturally aspirated growl when I moved to the new model but I don't miss it at all. I love the sound of my car in sports mode with the sports exhaust, but it sounds good even with that turned off. It makes a fabulous sounds and there's no shortage of burbles and pops. I've moved from having 2 PDKs back to a manual gearbox for this one and it was an excellent decision. The clutch in the Gen 2 is much gentler than in the 997s and 991 Gen 1. Yes it can be a bit of a pain in traffic but otherwise it's great fun. This is my 7th 911 and the best I've had! Enjoy!

Thanks Simon and Peter,
very interesting and I think many that weren't sure would be reassured if they were thinking of making the jump to the brave new world.

Sadly for me, I'm not in a position to trade up yet, just an interested bystander with an old banger LOL.

Hi Ellis.

Thanks again for your earlier reply and glad to hear that you're enjoying your Gen II!

What are the best things about the new Gen II?

And if you ordered another would you go PDK or manual?

Am agonising between PDK and manual. Looking to lock down next Saturday 24th. I get the impression that Sport Chrono has a lot of features that benefit the PDK transmission. Is it still worth it speccing Sport Chrono with the manual box and if so, what are the main benefits of SC with the non-PDK box...?

Cheers, Simon

I've just seen this post and I'm sorry for not getting back to you last month. I prefer the Gen 2 to the Gen 1. It's faster, smoother and just feels better to drive as far as I'm concerned. The entertainment system, PCM, sat nav and Iphone connectivity are all fantastic. I've just spent 2 weeks in the very north of Scotland driving along the fantastic roads up there and the car handled and performed like a dream. The manual gearbox was fantastic. The fact is that, in London where I live, the PDK makes life much easier. If I was speccing my next car, I'm not sure which I'd swing to be honest. What did you end up deciding?

Hi Ellis. Thanks for your reply. After much heart searching, I opted to keep my current 991.1 for a while longer, as I've only had it for 6 months. I actually got very close to buying their showroom 911. It was a Mexico Blue 991.2 C4S with lots of toys including rear wheel steering, SC, PSE, front axle lift, glass sunroof and many more. Ticket price of £117k. Was very tempted, but have 'sensibly' opted to keep my current C2 for a couple of years and then look to order a brand new 911 when the successor to the 991.2 is launched... All the best, Simon

[FONT=calibri"]Here is an extract from a few observations I made on a recent trip to the Yorkshire Dales in a loan car generously provided by OPC Tewkesbury.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"]By the time we got to Ingleton we were settling into it and over the next 17 miles to Hawes the C2 came into its own giving a cracking, spirited and involving drive. Comparisons in these matters are inevitably subjective but if the Ingleton to Hawes road in the C2 were to be compared with the run we all did in April over the Black Mountains when I was in the 991.1 GTS I would say there was not much to choose between the two cars.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]A quick look at the figures shows they weigh about the same and though the GTS has more power (430bhp v 370bhp) the 991.2 C2 has more slightly more torque (450Nm v 440Nm) but from 1700rpm rather than the 5750 rpm of the GTS. The result is that the C2 performance is very accessible from lower in the rev range. Now some may prefer to have to rev the nuts off to make progress in a wall of exhaust noise but I have spent too long being pushed along by a tidal wave of torque in a muted turbo S so would probably chose a 991.2 C2 over a 991.1 GTS. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]Mpg was 24 for the week end and just shy of 30 on the run home. I expected better to be honest but there again the car was very new and no doubt will loosen up over time.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]The most noticeable difference inside the cabin is the new PCM. I didn’t explore Connect Plus features but the new navigation works just fine without it. The graphics are much clearer and crisper than PCM3 and the zoom and map control features nicely done. No doubt time with the manual would reveal other secrets but the basic operation is very accessible.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]So all in all the base C2 is a very competent package and out in the real world all you actually need, though at £90k it’s not exactly cheap. But there again it is easy to spend quite a lot more without necessarily having that much to show for it other than in the car park at the Dog and Duck.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
