MP3 player interface

Hi,
I am not sure the title is technically correct, nevertheless here goes. I fitted a new Becker radio to my 993 about six years ago and recall reading on the Forum about a cable was/is available to make connection to an MP3 player or Ipod possible. There is no connection socket on the radio facia, at least not to my eye. Can anyone offer advice please? My wife's new car has a special socket and cable as standard so I am thinking I should join the twenty first century by investing in a small player to save having to juggle CDs with all the other clobber that needs to be stowed for long journeys. Sad really that I have to ask, but that's age for you. Thanks in anticipation.

PS Becker seem to have abandoned production of retro fit radios in favour of Sat Navs and OE equipment.

I don't have a Becker player but I found a neat solution was to buy the cable that connects the radio to a CD Multichanger. This then enables you to connect up a headphone cable which I ran under the dashboard. If brave you can drill a small hole in the glove box. Simply then put the stereo on AUX input and voila the ipod plays through the stereo. You don't get all of the flashy track info but it works for me. I suspect you can leads these days that provide track info, charge it etc but my stereo is a good 8 years old.

Try seeing if any Dension gateway products fit your requirements..... http://www.dension.com/ adam

If you have the Becker book for the radio you can see if it has aux rca inputs in the back. If that is the case you can buy an RCA - single connector or ipod connector from Russ Andrews. I ended up getting an Alpine unit to get around this problem.

You remember correctly, there was/perhaps still is a special Becker accessory for this. Plugs into the socket for the CD multichanger. Gives full control of the iPod from the Becker, including display of tracks etc. I'm away right now but when back next week I can look for the part number. You never know but some one might still have a stock of them.

Not sure if this is the one I have as not home yet but looks like it will do the job you want. http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.php?productid=95&cat=23&page=1 I have my iPod in the glove box and never need to touch the actual iPod except for taking it out of car to load new tracks and podcasts to it.

On the bay their is a device that replicates the cdautochanger allowing full control of a usb stick, sd card , ipod remotely and looks to be good value compared with beckers own accessory. Cj

Beware though that track info is only displayed on your Becker if the ipod is new enough. I think it has to be Gen 3 onwards, from memory. Older ones don't have the big, flat connector jack. I know this because mine's a Gen 2 to a Becker head unit via AUX, and it works only by means of its own controls. Jus leave it on Shuffle and all's good. Although the XCar Link product works well and I've had one, for me it's just way to bulky compared to just a wire into the back of the ipod. Mine's hardwired to the Becker and I've laid it round inside the back of the dash into the ashtray area (having removed the ashtray insert but not the hinged flap).

I've got the Becker iPod adapter with my Becker GP and I'm very pleased with it. Could be tricky getting one now though and be careful as early ones don't charge the later pods. Mine does as I got one of the last before they stopped trading in HU's. Get full control and track info via the HU and the Pod just hides away in the glove box.

Thanks everyone. I now know what to do and where to go. Forget the 993 Maurice, stick with your piano. Hanhams81
