Morning all,

No doubt this has been raised before so apologies in advance. What MPG does everyone get roughly?- I know this depends on style and type of driving.

Reason I ask is that when i bought mine I was averaging 22-25 MPG. Tried Super a few months ago and measured what i was getting (manually from 10 gallon fill up and repeat). Only got 18 MPG. Returned to normal unleaded and still only getting 18 MPG. This is mainly over a 34mile daily commute 60% steady 50-60mph, 40% town crawl.

It's been in to garage for system diagnostic, manually reset systems with battery disconnect. Just passed MOT and no problems with emissions, Lambda sensor is bang on (at 1.0001?!). Tyres OK, pressures OK, no smell of petrol...

Suggestions people? Garage looking into it too but welcome feedback and thoughts.

I'd hazard a guess that when you got it you were initially driving it like a "normal" car, now you are used to it you are driving it like a 911[:)]

Hopefully someone else will give you a more useful answer!
 
Im getting about 25 average this month, based on 60% 30-40mph, 40% 70mph commute, some town driving, the odd country-road thrash and some occasional motorway driving. Im using BP ultimate as I found its better for road driving that shell optimax; better low down torque and tractability and fuel consumption on both my old boxster and current 964. Also find its more economical than normal unleaded, plus I get the nectar points ;)
 
Craig, what super did you use? The 99 RONs have some bio-ethanol, Tesco 99 definitely does and think Shell V-Power does too. But BP Ultimate is 97RON and as far as I know has no Bio-ethanol blend(?) and that it why (as in smallspeed's case) it may be more suitable for the 964s (total guess)...

Edit: (total guess) - use in the numeric sense and not the fuel company Total [;)]
 
I always use BP fuels- collect nectar points too [:D] !! So 97 RON Super and 95 reg unld.

No change to driving style, 2000 rpm coasting, some hard acc but dont go above 4500rpm- no need!

Also tried the fuel injector cleaners etc. that you can get from Halfords (and other leading car parts places!) but didnt make any difference either...

Getting 22-23ish with Shell V-Power. Mixed driving. Drive in a spirited manor pretty much all the time including regular red-lining (engine loves it and I've noticed the exhaust emits a wonderful change in tone at about 6K rpm to a high pitched scream).

You're missing out on the most efficient rev range - above 4500 the engine starts to work properly and you'll find it uses less petrol :)

Surely, if the engine management has not been chipped it's not worth using anything better than 95 Ron? The 964 manual states 95 Ron with no recommendation for higher octane rating. I run the boxster on 97 Ron because that's what its manual recommends.

BTW mine averages something just above 20 mpg during normal use.

I found I got about 19-21 from 95ron, but around 23-25 from 97.. no benefit from going to 99 that I could see, so using 97 is more economical overall, thats the only reason I use it

I had similar experience - low 20s on 95ron, 28-9 on 97/99ron. Haven't noticed any particular power gains or improved running, but the saving of a few pennies overall puts a smile on my face!
 
If you don't rev your 911 to red line regularly, then you are not exercising the engine as it was designed to be used. i'm sure Ferry Porsche said something similar.
Science: Higher revs = higher operating temps and pressures, which burn off all the crap and expand your seals, so less leaks and so on.
And you're missing out on at a full 1/3rd of the engine's range = less enjoyment. Missing out on that glorious sound, and thrills!!
The healthiest 911 engines are run daily and to red line often :)
Petrol consumption and maintenance bills higher (and speeding points too) but hey, its only money.
 
Apparently even though you are buying 95RON petrol by the time it gets into your tank it is probably slightly less than 95 RON due to dilution of the fuel through the distribution network. Therefore if you go for 97RON you guarantee you are getting at least 95 RONs. The extra RONs don't hurt your engine.
