MPG

OK, so hardly the most riveting subject, but nevertheless I can't forget it.

After being prompted to display MPG on the Instrument cluster display after noticing one of our collegues on this board with a 500+hp Turbo S getting an average of 25MPG, I was surprised by my 3.8 naturally aspirated model with a paltry 350bhp, stuggling to reach 20MPG.

I know I'm not helping with my frequent short journeys, and the pedal on the right seeing its fair share of the carpet ... but even when driving 'carefully' an MPG in the early 20s is the best I can acheive.
Do others experience the same?

My long term average in my old carrerra 2s was low 20's and the 997 turbo I had for three nears was also that in fact a couple of mpg better normally, including track days, driving into london and normal cruising

I have a new turbo s to collect in a couple of weeks, the dealer has it ready but i cant pick it up until december, if it does near 25 that will be a real result

I've got a Turbo S and my computer readout shows an average of 24.3 mpg over 3,000 miles.

Spirited driving in 'sport' mode would no doubt reduce this to nearer 20 mpg, and clever economy driving would probably improve this to about 27 mpg.

My previous GT3 did similar mid-20s figures, which is actually very good for such performance cars. I would expect the standard 3.8 Carreras to average nearer 27-28 mpg in a normal mix of driving.

hi

have you tryed resetting the mpg-started my up today and drove to the end of the road-check mpg said 14mpg- going to dealer tomorrow for some wheel work and ask them to check mpg

They really do vary a lot depending on the type of driving (like most cars I guess!) I haven't reset the average on mine since new and now after 7500 it is showing 23.4. That a real mix of local, motorway and two track days (at 8mpg max!) and a far amount of "spirited" driving too! I could get 28-30 out of my Gen 1 C2s on a long journey but only 18-20 for stop/start driving. Yours sounds pretty much normal Peter[;)]

I frequently see 24 mpg from my Gen1 turbo and have even seen 30mpg after a long-ish motorway run at (almost) legal speed but it will dip to 20 or less if I start having fun on A and B roads.

Hi Pete "¦. I'm seeing an average of about 23-25mpg "¦"¦"¦.. don't worry about the Turbo guys, they pay for it in tyres he he he "¦"¦"¦[:D][:D][:D]

Hi

I took my car up to the Lake District this weekend gone and wanted to see what the ACTUAL mpg was for my 2006 C2S compared to the figure given in the trip computer. This was done by filling up at start and end of the journey and using litres of fuel used figures.

I covered 458 miles in total of which 400 were motorway - on my return leg I wanted to see the best mpg figure I could achieve at 70mph - my average TRUE FIGURE over they 200 return leg was 32.9 mpg. The trip computer reading is generally about 1.5 mpg higher than the true figure (PCM read 34.4mpg)

Now before you all have a go at me for driving like a pansy, I did this in the interest of research! Next time out I intend to make the old girl earn her keep by giving her a good pasting to make up for the easy ride she had :)

Nearly 33mpg true figure for a long run is pretty good going I was impressed.

Odd, there was I thinking 70 was the legal limit too..................[;)][:D]

If/when I did the 70mph run up the motorway I usually get 29mpg from the trip...
I did actually try this the once but found it so damn scary I prefer to put the extra petrol in [;)]
True I could do 56mph but that then does get really scary..

Its hard enough getting let out on the motorway under normal circumstances but in a Porsche []

Well done on the trip though- however only 58 miles around the Lakes!! [;)] thats the best part [:)]

garyw

I often got over 30 mpg on a long run.

A couple of points:

1. PDK improves the economy significanty.
2. Use of the higher octane fuel also improves the mpg, but I think the increased cost of the fuel cancels out the savings gained by increased mpg. Still worth using super unleaded though.

lol yeh 58 miles around the lakes was doing the Kirkstone Pass and also doing a nice run around Ullswater to Ambleside. Nice as it is driving around the lakes, you can't beat getting out of the car and using your legs!

Didn't brave Wrynose and Hardknott then?[:D]

On the mpg front if I cruise at 70 in 7th I get around 35(ish)

Brings back fond memories of sliding my C2S all the way along the twisty minor road in Great Langdale during last winter's freeze - very exciting and life-affirming.

Problem with the Lakes is the the crowded highway. Very hard to get a sustained section of clear road. And overtaking is limited by the road width/visibility. The classic passes are wonderful if clear and Dunmail Raise is quite good in either direction because of overtaking possibilities but you're better to hit the quieter roads. Good recommendation is the road from Little Langdale to Coniston, then along the shore of Coniston Water to its foot near Newby Bridge. At speed. Imagine you're chasing Bluebird, but don't end up like its driver.

Earlier in the year I had to drive down through Europe, one of those trips where you start off thinking, 'I'll see how far I can get before finding somewhere to stay' and then as progress was good, the prospect of making it in one go became the target. The result was as per the stats on the trip.

I thought that was impressive economy.

Not strictly to do with the thread but a sobering, if true, fact from QI (on the BBC website)

"The 10 gallons of fuel in the petrol tank of an average-sized car contain enough energy to run the electricity in an average-sized house for five years."
So why don't we have petrol powered electricity generation and £10/year electricity bills?[:D]
