Mud flaps?

Hopefully not going to get laughed at too much here but is there any mudflaps available for the 996? Don't mean big rally style flaps just something neat to take the edge off of all the chips spewed up by the rear wheels. Or do all porsche drivers just account for cosmetic resprays in their ownership costs? Thanks scott.

One of things that has surprised me since returning to Porsche from elsewhere (previously '90 964, now '03 996), is how much more susceptible to paint chips the car is compared to the older car. Maybe I'm more picky, maybe there's more debris on the roads but I point the finger of blame at the move to water based paints. Not convinced they are as resistant to chipping as before. Whatever the reason, my silver car is a pain to touch in.

I don't think there are any official ones.
There are no pre-drilled holes or anywhere obvious where you could fit them.
I presume they are not offered due to drag considerations. At 180 they might not fair so well.
There are also aesthetic considerations, since the car is supposed to look nice and sleek.

Of course, if the cars were to be officially used for rallying, perhaps these options might appear.

I don't believe water based paints are as hard, but environmental legislation means there is no choice for the manufacturer.

Interestingly my 964 Turbo has mud flaps these are original Porsche items and do a very good job at keeping those nasty stone chips at bay, especially on turbo arches!

There is a possible alternative........ magnetic........ as advertised in one of the performance products or mid america motorworks catalogues USA based Co's ??.
these magnetically stick onto the front of your rear wings, easily removable for shows, cleaning, selling and the likes.
Much the same as the older 911s, were also available for the Boxsters

Sounds a better alternative to flaps [;)]
I will have a hunt next time i find the mags

As Elliot already hinted , mid america motorworks do magnetic items for the Boxster, and also 'splash guards' for the Boxster and 996 - $50

Looks like they might be rear wheels only ?? - No drilling or screws - just clip on.

I hope are on commission. Elliot. You just sold me a pair - the last pair in stock I think. My office is at the end of an unmade road, and I am fed up with the mud spatter on the sills the day after I have washed it. I know I am a heathen, so I hope the purists among you will still talk to me. I'll let you have my impressions when I get them back here and fitted.

Ha ha, my cunning plan has hatched and i knew i could get somebody else to be my guinea pig! [;)]
Would be greatful if you could forward some pics to me when you get them, maybe a template as well so i can make some from the silver kaylan i've found (joke!)
Cheers scott.

I got the 'splash guards' this week and fitted them today. Pics are at:

Dead easy to fit - a genuine 10 minute job. It will be interesting to see how they work.

cheers for that. looks lik its just push on clips that hold them on? Might try and make a pair myself from kaylan (stuff rally cars use) then.

I spoke to my local Porsche OPC spray shop recently about getting my front resprayed because of stone chips. He said that the newer cars use water based paint because of EEC regulations. This water based paint is not as hard wearing as oil based paints. This is the reason why almost all Boxter/996's have chips.

Also the paint also seems to be even softer when the car is new. Most of my chips occurred within the first few months.

And scratches are a particular nuisance with this type of paint due to the clearcoat laquer;
if it's too deep it cannot be polished out otherwise you will end up with a 'matt patch' which will look even worse than the original scratch.
