"Mike. As the new owner of one of these rare cars may I ask you a couple of questions ?
I have read in a Porsche book that the Carrera has "lightweight trim", "black felt trim" or somesuch.

(Or is that just the Carrera GTS ? Can any 924 expert comment ?)

In my area of motorsport I am only allowed to make certain changes.
MSA rule reads :- "Any car which has been improved within the manufacturers specification for the range will be considered as Production."
As I intend lightening the car as much as possible it would be interesting to know the details of lightweight or even discarded trim ( rear seats ?).
I am 99% sure that I can use plastic side windows and rear hatch.
Thanks. "

Hey muddy - I have moved your question to here as I am embarassed as each time my original post goes to the top - and then people think I am buying some mid engined waste of design.

My knowledge of the 924, Carrera or the exquiste GTR and GTS is approaching zero - so I cannot comment.
Maybe some of the other people here in watercooler land can help?

I am willing for us to hook up and you can crawl all over it if you like.
I bought it on the general design principals and a recommendation of people whom I trust.

I am trying to get knowledge on the thing and so from this small amount of knowledge I have gained and looking at it, I do not think the carpets are especially light weight. Not like the carpets in an original '73 RS Leichtbau.

Using this inetrnetwebby thing I have come up with this site which has a nice GTR.

Another Carrera GT owner has kindly contacted me and he might know better.

I had come to this forum expecting a hot technical discussion place so I could ask these sort of questions. But sadly most of it appears to be populated by people worried about their rear light colours - aggg I am going to be sick!!

If it had been a VW Beetle I could have answered you chapter and verse and if we had been logged onto Volkszone and I had got a valve size out by 1 mm or the incorrect size of an emulsion jet in a 40IDF there would have been hoots of derision. There is a lot of knowledge there.

Just been reading another 924 book that arrived today - good old fleabay - and it is clear that it was the GTS and GTR models that used a lot of lightweight trim.

Carrera GT was better trimmed.

Forums are funny things. I have found this one helpful - John Barnatt (924nutter) has emailed me with a lot of help and sound advice - but there are odd posts as well .....
Rennlist.com website (American) has some very serious tuners contributing and is huge pool of expertise.

The ex-Al Holbert car looks terrific but everything looks brand new - I like cars with a bit of their history showing.
It will be interesting to see if it is regularly raced or just polished in order to appear at Pebble Beach.

The Riley 9 is progressing well. It is aimed purely at VSCC trials.
All the mechanics are done, the chassis shortened, etc. Over this winter I am building a period-looking but light 2 seater body
and as I'm a 6 footer it will be built with enough leg room!
I may well take you up on the offer to passenger when the car is completed. Whereabouts are you located by the way ?

I'm in Brum - not to far from Lands End [:-] !!!

I do agree with your rather more rational answer about forums, they are different and one has to pick from the posts.
I intend to start this book reading lark and try to ramp up my knowledge of the car. I always like to get the Zen of a car before I do anything, I like to listen to what it say sto me.

(as I write the above words all viewers roll their eyes upwards and think - bloody hippy - maybe, but a very oily and argumentitive hippy)

Brum is promising in that I am in the west of Shropshire, about 50 miles due west of you. And only 30 miles from the UK's best vintage trial - the VSCC Welsh Trial centred on Presteigne and run every October.

P.S. I'm just oily and argumentative !
