Hi All

Just purchased my first Porsche Boxster, an 06 987 and was wondering, before it goes anywhere, any must do's, or even don'ts?

ie, do I need to add any bits or be aware of any little irritations, why do I know thta I'm gonna regret asking this question [8|]

In addition, I used to run motorbikes and always kept the batteries 'topped up' using Optimate SP III charger's. Is it recomended to be used on the Porsche?

Thanks in advance

Keith

Certainly keep an eye on the battery condition. If you're not going to use it that often, invest in a battery conditioner - the Porsche one is available through companies like DemonTweaks as the CTEK 3600 for less than £60.

I would also make sure the roof has had waterproofer applied - I use the two-part Autoglym product, although I haven't actually used the cleaner yet. Rain should ball up and roll off nicely once treated.

If you're in or considering the Porsche extended warranty, however, you won't be "allowed" to make any changes or modifications to the car.

Without a doubt the big benefit of Optimate charger or similar is your Batteries fitter for longer, with any vehicle not used daily that an obvious Plus fact on cost and conviencence. However that is certainly even more so with the Boxsters, although I have an 986s and no expert on either model , I would fully expect after five days of no use you could run flat on a boxster as its always using power.
You then have real issues and problems you don't want , like being Unable to open bonnet, though I am no expert I have run optimates for nearly 20 yrs, I expect others will advise you on any problems to watch out and batteries good luck.

Well I left my Boxster for nearly a month over Christmas and it fired up first time, I think some of you guys need your batterys checking out!
One problem the Boxster does have is corroding disc brakes, the inner rears especially rust quiet quickly so if you wash the car make sure you go for a drive to dry of the brakes.

Thanks guys. The spare optimate will go on at the weekend and the tip about the roof seems a good one as I look out of my office, looking at my car, while the pooring rain covers it without 'balling up' [&:]

1. Don't wash the roof too often and then with clean water only - avoid use of shamppos as it removes the waterproofer over time.

2. Dry the brakes after washing the car - they corrode in minutes !

3. Battery maintainer essential if car not used every day - Porsche battery life on lightly used cars is about 3 years if not maintained, so watch out ! Swapping the Porsche battery for another brand invalidates your warranty.

4. Check the water drains under the front bonnet and rear clamshell for leaves n debris - once these block the rainwater ends up in the cabin.

5. Check the front air ducts for debris building up on the rads - hoover the debris out every few months, oterwise when wet if corrodes the air con condensors at a rapid rate.

6. Go drive it [:D]

Superb info guys. I looked in my garage last night and found an Autoglym roof cleaning kit, unused from our A4 Cab days!

On driving home last night, the respect I got from other drivers, moving out of the way on the motorway, ladies looking and smiling and drivers flashing for a police speeding van parked down the road was a delight. It reminds of of my biking days, well in some respects anyway [:)] I so love that growl at 5000rpm up to the redline, sooooooooooo addictive [:)]
I shall drive some more.

Hi
Just purchased XS3600 charger for my Boxster from In-Car Express, Cambridge at a cost of £47.86. Excellent service as it was delivered the following day. e-mail sales@incarexpress.co.uk - as it appears on the invoice. Good luck

Fortunately, I have an Optimate over from my biking days, which only ended in November btw. I'm sure I have a lead in the garage that attaches directly onto the battery terminals. My only real concern is 'how' and 'where' I leave the plug sited so that I can keep the car locked whilst on the optimiser. I do not have an alarm system fitted so any tips would be helpful [;)]

I have the CTEK one and use their ciggy lighter adaptor, so just the cable running through the door rubber.

I also have the Tronic T4X (equivalent to CTEK 3600) sold in Aldi for £13.99, which i modified with another ciggy lighter plug - all in under £20

Zunsport make an overgrille leaf catching kit for the 987. Its not cheap (about 100 pounds) but may well save you a trip to the dealer and new front radiators in future. Sign up to all the porsche forums such as renntech.org , and particularly boxa.net to allow you to ask tech questions and swap ideas with other owners.

If you want some suggestions for mods to do to the car , consider a short shift kit and radio upgrade. The front bumper and bonnet are prone to stone chips, if the paintwork is in good nick at the moment a paintshield clear coating will allow it to remain that way for years to come.
