my 1986 944 for sale - parts or restoration

Hi guys

Well at long last I'm putting my red 1986 944 up for sale. It's been in storage since I got the 987 and while I thought that I'd get around to restoring it, i need to face facts and realise that's not going to happen. I'm starting an MBA part time and that coupled with work means I'm going to have even less time than before. As I'm paying for storage the car needs to go. I'm putting it up here first, as I'd rather sell it quickly with no fuss before i have to deal with a load of idiots from eBay.

If you're interested let me know and I'll send or host the photos.

As many of you may know i've got no mechanical skills so when i was using the car on a daily basis it was maintained with little regard for cost by RPM Technic (initially) then by Ninex Motorsport, then Tower Porsche and RGA after i moved to London. So I've got bills for around £7 or £8k over the 4-5 years. However the car has sat unused for the last 17-18 months. It was last started about 4 months ago and it fired up first turn of the key though obviously the battery was flat.

Being realistic, it would needs a fair few things doing to sort it. So the bad bits are as follow:
  • New tires
  • Belts need doing as it's over 4 years
  • Sills need doing (practically a given as you all know)
  • It's been parked outside for a long time so needs a pretty thorough clean
  • a bit musty inside
  • a general recommission
hence i suspect that it's primarily for parts unless someone is enthusiastic about sorting out.

open to offers... Send me a PM should you be interested. At the moment I'm paying to store it so am motivated to sell as quickly as possible.

Ian

A hard decision to come to, no doubt, but perhaps the best as it isn't getting used.

While £2K averaged out per year is a fair sum to stomach it perhaps isn't excessive based on the nature of the car and is far less than the depreciation on almost any new or nearly new car over that period.

I hope you get a reasonable sum back for the car and it goes to someone who will move it forward rather than just strip it down.

Hello Ian,
I would be interested for restoration. Could you give me any idea what you are looking for as your bottom line?
Thanks

At the time I spent the money I knew that I'd never get it back. I don't begrudge spending it at all. I'd dreamed of owning a 944 for many years and it gave me some great times. A couple of great trips to Scotland with my girlfriend, her annoyance with me getting into an hour long chat with a Ferrari owning guy from Switzerland who had owned a 944, her extreme anger at offering to fill up the car at the next petrol stop only to discover it swallowed just under £100 of Mr Shell's finest (one very spirited day of driving through the Scottish mountains!), wonderful drives in the lake district, more runs up Prescott Hillclimb than i can count, plus meeting loads of great people. It also took me to and from work for several years and in spite of much ribbing about an old Porsche, everyone did envy it.

Depreciation would have cost me much much more and not been half as much fun. So no I don't regret it one little bit.

cheers
Ian
